ok my car was showing a code I checked it and it was the passkey 2 or what ever it is.. then I am driving down the road and the security light is on then it goes off then comes back on.. and today I was parked at a freinds house got it and it would not start and there was the security light glowing at me.. I tryed several times and it would not work.. so I sat there for a second and the light went off and it started.. but then I was driving and the security light came on.. is there a way to do away with this system??? its getting to be more of a problem than its worth.

do a search on the internet for a "square wave generator"
build the circuit (costs about ten bucks in parts at radio shack prices). and then you can cut the wire between the pcm and vats comp. i replaced one of the resistors with a varistor to make the frequency variable.
easy squezzy.

Just to give some insight on why Vats usually goes bad, VATS is actually a pretty good system, the part that goes bad is the cheapo wires gm used to hook it up to the ignition cylinder.
Thier are two tiny wires running out from your ignition cylinder, and when you have a car with normal wear and tear, after so many turns the wires begin to rub and sometimes even get cut from being moved around.
I bet if you were to take your steering wheel off and take a look around your ignition cylinder, you'll probably see one of the two tiny wires hanging by a thread.
First thing to do is clean the key, if it still doesn't work you got two options....Bypass it or go to the dealership and buy a replacement for $100+

exactly. my one wire broke flush with the key cyl 3 days after I got my car. I do like the system and it works rather well. If you hav ever been in a GM collum before it's a real breeze to replace the key tumbler. I think it was 60 bucks for the part from the dealer but you can probably find a better price. if there is a good theif that is gonna get your car he will get it no matter what. but aroound here the punks don;t know anything and the VATS would keep them from geting away in my baby... just something to think about
