Ken S 01-08-2004, 12:20 PM Check In the Feb Motortred mag where they tested the Camry, Malibu, Galant, and Accord.
Basically, they were putting the Malibu thru the slalom testing, and after each pass, Onstar would activate and ask "Have you been just in an accident?"
LMAO!
Another reason why I'm not getting Onstar.
Joe K. 96 Zeee!! 01-08-2004, 12:29 PM You know, I try to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I could just see doing some spirited driving followed by...."This is the ____ state police." Over the speaker. "Please drive to the nearest police station and turn yourself in." LOL!!
SNEAKY NEIL 01-08-2004, 12:38 PM That's pretty funny.
What was the results of that article, since I do not have mine yet?
305fan 01-08-2004, 01:16 PM Also happend on Motor Week TV
Z28Wilson 01-08-2004, 01:19 PM Obviously a bug that they sure as he** better have ironed out before they consider putting OnStar in their performance cars:alert:
I thought it would only activate if the airbags go off or something. Wouldn't that be logical?
Ken S 01-08-2004, 01:21 PM 4. Toyota Camrly XLE ( Last! Can you believe it?)
3. Chevy Malibu LT
2. Mitsu Galant GTS
1. Honda Accord EX (also the most expensive)
Basically, the liked how the Galant and Accord looked and felt the best. The Malibu's perf was slower (although normal driving they liked the tq down low) and they though the styling was a lil on the bland side(then again, I think the Accord is downright ugly!) The Camry was just too boring and numb.
Good thing is they liked the Malibu's interior, and rated the highest on value... the least expensive and chocked with a huge amount of options.. Good job Chevy!
Basically, none of the cars really had any major quibbles.. I mean geeze, they rated the perrenial Camry last!
305fan 01-08-2004, 01:24 PM Yes slower but 0-60 in 7.6 isn't bad--note it edeged ahead of the Camry in the 1/4 mile.
They gotta put some gears in the Malibu...3.07s!!! By far the lowersdt (numerically) in the test. 1600rpms at 60mph.
Notice which car was MIA?? The Mazda 6...wonder why?
Joe K. 96 Zeee!! 01-08-2004, 05:47 PM 7.6 0-60 is darned good! That's coming very close to my ol' 3800 F-body! Which was also within nipping distance from the stang GT's of the day.
and the Camry was $30,000:eek: $6,000 more than the Mailbu
Fbodfather 01-08-2004, 08:17 PM and what makes you think there isn't a performance version coming down the pike????
The onStar thing.......hmmmm...hadn't heard about that one!
poSSum 01-09-2004, 12:13 AM A cheap Canadians perspective on OnStart ...great idea ...especially the safety aspect of it ...lousy execution.
How about ...
1. Include basic service free with the roadside assistance package ....for roadside assistance use.
2. Set it up to dock with regular cell phones ...I'm not prepared to pay twice ...and Red ....I saw you dial, I'd be home before I finished dialing Marion to tell her she can start getting supper on the table.
3. Offer short term "travel packs" or a "pay per use" option.

That's coming shortly, I believe..........
Fbodfather 01-09-2004, 12:43 AM BTW...don't know whether anyone's posted on this site about OnStar Promo....but we're giving away 1,000 new GM cars and trucks......just stop by your local participating GM dealer......push the button.......and win instantly.......vehicle selection at random based on the division's car you are calling from.........(i.e...call from a Chevy...win a Chevy.....)
scott9050 01-09-2004, 01:14 AM Onstar is very close to big brother. No thanks.
Darth Xed 01-09-2004, 08:26 AM I love OnStar. I think it is fantastic.
I doubt I'd buy a car without it today.
My safety and the safety of my family is worth more to me than any 'conspiracy theory'.
I have re-upped the Safe & Sound Package on the Monte SS after the free 1-year subscription expired.
Threxx 01-09-2004, 09:56 AM Does anybody else find it odd that they equipped the Accord and Camry with navigation and several other toys that aren't even available in the other two cars, then turned right around and talked about how expensive the Accord and Camry were compared to the others? lol
I was very surprised to see the Camry come in last. I guess it all depends on your preferences, and seeing as how Motor Trend drivers are performance enthusiasts, I'm not surprised to see they hated the Camry.
Given the choice between the Camry and new style Accord, I'd take the Accord in a heartbeat- it's much more exciting to drive, has much more responsive performance and incredible chassis dynamics, not to mention things like the guages, navi, and ergnomics aren't even found in some cars twice the price.
But at the same time I think the Camry deserves a lot of credit as its definitely the quietest, smoothest riding, best-built and most likely will be the most reliable of the bunch both short-term and long-term.
The new Malibu also seems to be a big step up from the previous generation too. Although time will tell if it holds up better than the previous generation that was plagued with random issues- especially electrical gremlins which can be a bigger PITA than anything else on a car because they're so hard to track down and point out sometimes.
I'm just surprised to see a Mitsubishi in 2nd place. Have they made some sort of dramatic turn-around in the last year or two because most 2 year old Mitsus I've see and every last 5 year old Mitsu I've seen has been a POS on wheels.:o
Joe K. 96 Zeee!! 01-09-2004, 10:02 AM I'd agree Camry is a good car, but it's just sooooo bo-ring!!
I've driven one more than a few times and it's the equivilent of going to Baskin Robins and ordering a single scoop of vanilla in a cup! That's right....not even the cake cone!!

One of our friends from church drove us to Chicago last spring when we went to Ft. Lauderdale and took us in his new Camry. The thing had to be one of the most boring cars I have ever seen or been in. It had no soul so to speak.
305fan 01-11-2004, 10:08 AM I noticed that too Threxx---if they couldn't get a Camry for $26.000 then they should have just pretended they did.
Bashing it for the price when it was totally loaded up with options is just dumb. Even M/T thought it had no soul.
Given the choice between the Malibu and the Camry--I'll take the Malibu--throw on a cat-back, some nice looking 17' rims/tires and lowering springs.
morb|d 01-11-2004, 11:18 AM i've been inside a Malibu at the LA show. its sh!t. not the sh!t. sh!t, period. my mom's 99 Camry has a far better intrior and its 4 years old.

While i agree, is it any more or less exciting than a malibu? I think they're all very boring with the exceptions being the Mazda6, S/c'ed Impala SS, Accord v6, and Atlima v6. The malibu even moreso than the camry since its exterior/interior styling seems even more generic/bland.
Pandamonkey 01-11-2004, 01:31 PM I'd buy a vehicle with onstar - I don't give a crap if "The Man" is watching me or not.
As a safety feature alone - it's worth the D'oh!
Ken S 01-12-2004, 11:06 AM why do you feel so exactly?
