Does the "Cobalt SS" reduce the coolness factor of a "Camaro SS"?
NO!!!!!!!anybody remember the formula sunbird from the '70s???no.to quote carroll shelby,if the car's great, the name won't matter and if it's junk, the name won't save it.an SVT focus or contour(great cars by the way)don't take away from the cobra, just as a SS cobalt won't take away from the deceased camaro,if it sucks,no one will remember it,but people will always remember the camaro SS because it kicked ***.if we applied this kind of logic to everything, then does the rest of chevy's bland car lineup reduce the coolness factor of a ZO6?nope.if i had a ZO6,i'd be like....cobalt?malibu?what are those??who cares,i got a Z06!!!!!!!!!
I normally take a pretty measured view on things like this.
But after actually seeing the Cobalt SS in person, and hearing GM brass talk about what Cobalt SS will have when it debuts this fall, I'll not only say no, but Hell No!!
Put it this way. The thing's going to have a supercharged engine putting out "in excess of 200 hp" (from Gary Cowger himself), and will have 18" wheels from the factory.
Silverado SS can easily be considered a screwup (or more politely, misdirected). But Cobalt Supercharged SS is an entirely different animal!

I said "no" but it all depends on what the Cobalt SS gets. If it is a real performance machine in it's segment, then I think it will not cheapen the SS name. Everything looks good so far and GuionM seems to be very confident so I think it looks like a real winner and worthy of the SS name.
I think Cobalt SS is exactly where "SS" needs to be....today.
SS should be about cool, affordable, fun, mass appeal performance for Chevrolet.
I think Cobalt SS will finally give the SS badge the definition and direction it hasn't had in a loooooong time.

Don't forget the pre 04 Monte Carlo SS (they were non supercharged) that was tarnishing the SS name as well.
As long as they have a dedicated,n true "SS" package
(which includes suspension, wheels and increased hp) I don't mind them spreacing the SS around. (No Aveos though--its not even a GM car)

I don't think anyone after seeing the S/C Impala SS and Monte SS can say a Cobalt SS would ruin the SS name. A potential 14 second pocket rocket deserves the SS name in my opinion, especially with the trends chevy is making with the ss name.

Okay I forgot about the S-10 SS my bad. But the Monte surely didn't improve upon that at all. Of course thats Chevys fault--I mean the GTP had the blown 3800 since 97 and it took 4 years for Chevy to smarten up.
I have had a Monte Carlo SS as well--an 87 but at the time that kind of accleration was considered good. I read a neat article once comparing the 3.4L DOHC VS the 3800 NA Montes (Z34s)
and they were the exact same 1/4 times......16.0---which was about what a 87 SS could do too.
Anyways..I am way off topic now

The SS badge only became so popular because of the types of cars it was put on (427 Impala, 454 'velle, 396 Camaro...).

Z's are saved for the cool ones only.
