Raced a 70 Cougar with a 460 in it!!!

It was a lovely day out Sat here, so I went driving around for a little while in town (small town about 3500 people). As I'm heading down the main street this white 69 or 70 (not real sure on the years) Mercury cougar pulls out a ways in front of me, it had some old crager type rims on and the front ones were really narrow with wider ones out back, it had a small black factory looking wing out back and a black scoop on the hood. The car was very very loud, as we pulled up to the light (we have 2 in town) his car had a very raunchy idle and did I say it was very very loud? any way he revs it a bit and waves forward to me. ( I know the guy but didnt know he had this car, of course how could I not know him, I'm practicly related to everyone in town).
Anyway the light turns green and we take off, I spin very badly and am unable to hook whatsoever so I let out, he sees my plea and lets out too (he was aways up) we start heading out of town and I ask him to go from about 30 mph up til were satisfied .
He agrees and wants me to honk (we go on the third). third honk comes , and we run side by side until I shift to third at which point I pul labout 4 to 6 cars on him. We turn around and repeat it back into town with the same results.
Back into town we pull over and he's absolutely amazed, we both pop our hoods (mine first). He looks mine over and I tell him what all Ive done to it( he still seems amazed) . I was kinda wondering why he was still having a hard time beleiving my mods until I looked under his hood. There sat a big block Ford 460 , he said it was .030 over with forged pistons (he's adding Nitrous later) with DoveC heads with bowl work and Milodon valves. Hes running a big FM cam , aluminum intake, and a 850cfm Demon carb. He had Hooker Ceramic coated headers with 2.25 dia primaries, 3 inch piping and 2 chamber flowmasters. The tranny was a C6 with 3500 stall and a 9 inch out back with 3.90 gears. He had it to the track earlier in the year and said it ran high 12s @ 107 mph, on Stret slicks as he called them. I then understood why he was confused as to why I beat him pretty good.
Now I'm really wanting to get to the track in the spring to see howmuch this new cam gave the combo (switched from a 224/230 XE cam to a 230/236 XE cam).

How is the mph off? Before tuning a friend's 3800# 95 T/A ran 12.7@106

I didnt realize there was a slide rule that told you how fast your car should run the 1/4 that was allways correct....lol. Been using the desktop Dyno too much I'd reakon, My car makes over 500 hp on the Desktop Dyno, but I know it makes much less than that. Oh well , I guess youd call BS on my old car that ran a 13.0 @100 MPH once.
Of course the Nitrous solonoid shut off about 800 feet out and I was coasting. But you'll learn as you get older that you never say never.
Anyway I was just repeating what he said and I beleive him.
Have you weighed any of the older cougars before they got large? They are just a bit bigger than a fox mustang.

That's right in the ballpark for the f-bodies.
12.0 @ 107 sounds fishy but not high 12s.

WS sick... with that situation you mentioned about the solenoid shutin off is one of those variables that just throw all the "estimates" out the window.
That's just like a 10 second car running 13.0 @ 77 mph.
My buddy's mustang ran that and he could keep the tires form spinning.
You just can't use those numbers to show peak performance.

Yeah I know they were throwout numbers I just think people get too caught up in saying if this is this then that is that and never take other possible factors into consideration. Saying that a high 12 @ 107 mph is kinda fishy, funny, or wrong is assuming that every factor that you consider is met. Which hardly is ever the case. For instance , the car in question has had its weight only assumed, as well as the amount of traction it had on its 1/4 mile pass. Throw a few variables in and anything goes.

most people that are going to shoot 1/4mile times are going to give their best times... my old talon ran 16.00 @ 99 +, but when people would ask i'd say my best was---> 14.2 @ 102 with crappy 2.3 and worse 60ft. ... guess i'm just used to a bit higher mph on such a big car (and being that there was no mention of wt. reduction there should be a higher mph)...

and i'm not getting any younger @ age 32... i've been arround drag/ street cars since i was 14 y/o... again the #'s just didn't/don't seem to match up, i DIDN'T say he didn't beat it...

if the car was real light i could see that mph...

i guess maybe he let off @ the end or had problems (most of us do from time to time), or it was a real light tube framed car, it just seems a bit off... and again nice kill...

32 ? youre still a pup !!! . I'm not saying youre an Idiot or that youre a dumb A. I'm just saying that those slide rules are not allways correct, they can get you close but they are not a definate. When I first put my motor in this car together, the first time at the track I ran a 12.54 @ 108 and my best mph that day was a 109 but the E.T. was a 12.8. I did some sorting and retuning and my MPH went up by 4 mph , but my E.T. stayed around the same.
I didnt look the car ober really really good , but I would say the only thing that was lighter was maybe the wheels and tires. Anyway The times are what he gave me, for all I really know he could never have been to the track. One thing to consider is the 460 is really grunty and could have ran out oif air.

Patrick ,I dont mean to be a Butt or anything just BSing with ya.

Thanks on the congrats

HAHAHA, i've been here for a few years posting, and IRL i'm one of the bigest smart azzes (and jokers) you'd ever meet, i don't take offense... there are a few 460's here in west michigan one in a mid 70's bronco that runs 9's, they are great for torque and make maaaaad hp when gone over (they do after all start off in trucks)... i've always liked the eliminator package on those older merc.'s, they look tough...

the 1st time @ the track is usually real eye opening (guy this summer had a z06 (405hp) and ran 15.0 @ 103, needless to say he was a bit nervous and with a 3.0 60ft, i think he did something wrong like maybe his traction controll was on)... i think he finally got it into the 13's but it took a while for him to relax...
