Header Wrap

I am thinking about intstalling a header wrap on my 350. I get a big wave of heat from under the hood after running it for a while. The engine is not running hot so i assume that it's heat from the headers. My question is, is this stuff really worth the money? I've only read the advertisements, and never talked to anyone who has had it installed. Does it work as well as the ads say it does?

I have header wrap on my headers, they seem to keep the temperatures down quite a bit, after running my 305 for about 10 minutes I can still touch the headers without burning my self.

I used DEI wrap that I bought on Ebay, and sprayed it with header wrap high temp coating from summit. I would buy the wire ties to hold the wrap on-I used regular hose clamps, and I had some clearance problems getting the bolts to align straight when bolting the headers up. You will probably need about 75 feet, I had a little left over.

its better to get them coated because the wrap ussually doesnt like daily driving because of the longer use time and is generally more for drag racing. the wrap stuff can bake onto the headers and deteriorate and it can also cause early corrosion.

i know the coatings are expensive (too expensive for me, even tho i recomended it) but the wraps arent a great long term solution becasue they can cause other problems.

Thanks both of you for your comments. Where is a good place to get them coated?

Jet-Hot is the big name in coating, but Paul Berry (www.PBMotorsports.com) does very nice work and I recommend him.

I'm doing an econo-build up on my firebird and every $20 counts... Having the headers coated, directly from the manufacturer, is almost twice as expensive. For a cheap buildup, is the cost of coating really worth the gains??? I also am carbed, so my open element would probably suck up a lot more heat then a ducted fuel injected car...something to consider. Just curious.

Thanks guys. :)

KnightRider350: I am doing the same kind of cheap build up as you. I got all the stuff to wrap my headers for $40 from ebay, I dont think that the headers themselves will last as long with the wrap, but you get the same effect as coating for alot cheaper.

Also, be warned, if you use header wrap, it will void most header manufacturers warranty.

Header wrap isn't really a good idea for a street car. The first time you drive in the rain the wrap will get soaked, and that stuff is bad about retaining moisture. You can expect your headers to rust through within a couple years.....which is why it voids the warranty.

Coated headers will last longer than the car. The question becomes: Would you rather spend an extra $150 to get them coated, or have to buy and install a new set of headers every 2-3 years?

But that's just my view on the subject.
