I have a 396 that should ahve 500-550 hp just got rebuilt i would like $2500. You said you wanted a 454 but a 396 is a better motor in my opion because it is internally balanced.

Just remember..... there no replacement for displacement

Yes, there is its called nitrous ;) J/K

A 454 is a fine motor but i would much rather have an internally balanced motor because they usually last longer under extreme conditions. And everyone has a 454 not everyone has a 396 since they are considerably less common.

If you want my 396 i would be willing to meet about half way or i would consider splitting the shippping.

396 sounds great but i really want the big block, and id rather work on something more common
common = more troubleshooting
common = cheaper parts

The 396 is a BBC also, I've talked to my engine man about the 396/454 and he can build a 396 and a 454 for around the same price. This is a price that your average joe modder can afford too.

First smokerz28 is right a 396 is a big block and parts arent hard to find at all its just not as common because they didnt buuild them for many years but it shares a lot of parts with other big blocks (same idea as 302, 327, 350 in the small block variety) and thsi motor is already done so you wouldnt need any parts even has a 750 double pumper on her.

ok drop some specs on the 396 and ill consider it =D
about the manifolds would i be able to find some that would fit in a 3rd gen bird? because i know a guy that has put a 454 in an 89 camaro and it wasnt that hard to get some stock manifolds to fit only a small dent in the shock tower.

go 540 Stroked big block:bow: if you can afford it

KITTonSteroids

 540 would be one hell of a motor, even if i could afford it that would be a one way ticket to get myself killed =P

You can get a set of header for putting the 396 in a third gen for like 120 bucks out of summit and if you look around maybe cheaper. It has about 10.1 compresson, the heads had a port job done but i dont know how extensive, and a pretty good hydraulic lift cam. its a reallly nice street strip motor.

u mean there 380 from summit no way in hell are they 100$ new

i agree with 84 there is no way you could get even a halfassed set of third gen heads for 100 bucks but other then that it sounds like a decent motor.

Your right i was thinking of a 2nd gen, although you will have the same problem with any big block because they all use the same headers.

I have a 468 BBC shortblock that was professionally built and never used. It has SRP 10.25: pistons and is zero decked. I won't be using it. I decided to go with a 540 instead. :D

IF i decide to go with headers ill probly check ebay. i dont feal like fabricating anything to make them fit and i know of some manifolds that will fit pretty nice.

396/427 are crap...go with a 454 atleast...I believe the ones that came out of trucks used 4 bolt mains

the oval port heads on it were junk though...if you are on a budget look for the square port iron heads...they are all over racingjunk.com and a few on ebay....

good luck,
Rick

How can you say that a 396/427 is crap. True a 454 has more displacement but a the 396/454 will take more abuse and the 454 and the 427 use the same block so exactely what are you talking about and do you have any experience with BBC's?

am I now? hmmm....

my 98 T/A used to have a fully forged ARE 360 LS1 N20 motor.....I got tired of that and decided that a Big Block was what I wanted...so now I am just about done with my 502 big block swap in my 98 T/A....I am doing it myself other than the machine work....engine, custom fabbing and all.....

so 1984camaroz28, feel free to pull foot out your mouth now :D

396 takes more abuse? Who told you that? I have plenty of friends running 454 motors with PLENTY of power on the street and at the track reliably....

I wouldn't be running a stock block anyhow if you plan to make more than 800 hp for a long time IMO....I would look into a bowtie block atleast...

454's can be bought cheap so what justification do you have for not getting one over a 396???

427s are sick and so are 396s... My uncle has a 427 in his camaro currently running low 9s but w/e..... Any who I whould love to see pics of the swap... Pm me and let me no how much work it was and how much it coast you.....and what did u do for headers

JurisAg02
01-24-2004, 06:42 PM
I will post pics when it is all done! :D

headers are Hooker, custom aswell

the fact that I am using a motor plate instead of motor mouts helped a little...and room was really no problem like I had thought in the begining, I used a big block K member w/ no motor mounts from BMR made specifically for 4th gens that helped ALOT with the room for headers!...I have had alot of hookups so this probably cost me a little less than most people BUT to be honest with you it cost alot less to build this project than it did to build up the LS1...crazy hehe

I am still not quite done so once it is up and running I wil let you guys know how it all went

Rick

I have personally seen the 396 BBC that Formula03 is selling. This is one bad monster!!!! Painted! COMPLETE, down to the friggin pullies if I remember right. From CARB to OIL PAN!!!! You can't beat that for the price!!! It is one stout motor, and if I remember right it doesn't have but break-in miles on it, you'll have to toalk to Formula about that though.........With this 396 in a 3rd gen, with suspension and tranny to handle it, I would say EASY 11's!!!!!!!!!!!

can i see pictures of the big block in the t/a..... How much for the 396

Formula03
01-26-2004, 12:19 AM
I would like $2500 and ill split shipping. If that isnt do able i can try and come up with something better but for waht it is that is a good price. In case you are curious it comes with a 750 double pumper for the carb.
