AustinZ28 12-17-2003, 07:05 PM Hey guys- I have to get my tranny rebuilt and figured I should go ahead and replace the stock clutch.
I plan on having a daily driven car with around 400RWHP when I'm done with the engine. What clutch should I go with? I want something cost effective as well.
Thanks -Brad
94 CAMRO Z28 12-17-2003, 07:16 PM Spec stage II if you want a stock feeling clutch that is good for 450hp+...if you want something a little bit stronger yet go with the stage III...Your gonna get a lot of people telling you the street twin is the only way to go but unless you have $1K to spend on a clutch setup, the specs are hard to beat.

Cheapest place to get a Spec stage II? Thanks for the reply bro. -Brad
atljar 12-17-2003, 07:44 PM Centerforce w/ an ADJUSTABLE slave will work. All problems people have with them is because they dont disengauge or engauge fully. The adj slave will fix that.
Specs, eh. Seen quite a few gernade, they have sinced "revised their design" (for the hundredth time
I've got a Street Twin. Definately not cheap (I got it new-in-box with my T56 when I did the conversion) but it definately has a solid feel. Grippier than other clutches I've felt. Not quite an on-off switch, but close... If the car's off you can hear it clunk in and out if you press the pedal. I'm not sure what mileage they're rated to, but it will definately hold up to aggressive driving.
AustinZ28 12-17-2003, 09:58 PM I was looking in some old threads, what about an LT4 clutch? - I really dont want to spend a lot on a clutch, what will give me the best bang for my buck? - Thanks guys ---->Brad
atljar 12-17-2003, 10:11 PM The lt4 is a great clutch, thats what i am running now, but its not really designed for the amount of power you mentioned. It would be great on the street, no no at track on stickies.
DrewHMS97SS 12-17-2003, 10:19 PM i would go luke if you are looking at money, and twin street if you are looking at performace. DO NOT BUY CENTERFORCE. they are by far the cheapest clutches i have ever used.

How much power can the LT4 handle? Would you recommend any other clutches? Something $400 or lessish? Is that reasonable? -Brad
jchevy 12-17-2003, 10:37 PM Look into the lt4 pressure plate and a mcleod performance disk. I have heard decent thing about it, but not sure if it will stand up to 400 hp

Ya they dont work if you dont have an adjustable slave like i mentioned already, Did you have one? Im willing to bet you didnt. My buddy ran one on a procharged 383 (tracked weekly for 1.5 seasons), then took it out eventually to go auto. Threw it on his garage floor. 3 years later, they decided to throw it into a heads/cam Z (1.6 60, slicks, 6000+ launches). Rusted, previously abused, the thing still lasted another 2 track seasons when they thought it was going to be a temporary fix. Not a cheap clutch in anyway, just require modified hydrolics to run it. Still going to run ~$650 after the adj slave.
As far as a cheaper clutch, hard call. Honestly i would prolly just throw the lt4 in there if you are on that tight of budget and get as long of a life out of it as you can. Down the road, hopefully you will have the money to buy a better clutch which will hold the power you may have by that time.
DrewHMS97SS 12-18-2003, 03:04 PM i bought my centerforce through checker, and got their 1 year warrenty.
i burnt the first clutch in 4 months, 5000 miles, street driven. The second clutch is now doing the same bs. i bought a new bled system from gm with the second clutch.
anything that needs weights to hold is sad. take luke for instance, it takes the stock holding power of a clutch, and doubles it. so a luke clutch will be ~450 and still hold better than a lt4 clutch. centerforce is hyped up retail bs. if you were running track, thats not much driving. these things are LAME.
my94blackz 12-18-2003, 03:13 PM Well is it my turn to jump in?? Hehe i am running the lt4 PP and mcleod disk. My mods are quite considerable and im prolly close to 400hp. Now when i first got my car it had a centerforce in it for bout 3 years lasted till i put the heads and cam in. The rear main is what made it go bad, but the clutch i have now is alot better. I would recomend this setup to any six speed person. Well thats my .02

Your not listening. You NEED AN ADJUSTABLE SLAVE CYLANDER. Without one, you will toast clutch after clutch. It burnt the clutch because it wasnt fully disengauging, adjustable slave would have fixed that ;)
As for pressure plates, only people that make ones for our car is a company named valeo (i believe thats how you spell it). For increased holding power you either need to mess with disk friction materials, or be creative. Centerforce uses weights which sling out on the clutch to "load up" the plate and give more holding power. McCloud modifies the stock pressure plate to have clearance for the twin disks and just relies on 2x the friction area and better friction material.
