OH NO! Car died on me! Need some help
i was on my way to discount auto's to get a DMM when, in the parking lot, my car just died all of a sudden. happened right when i was pulling into the parking space. anyways, when i turn the key, it keeps trying to start, but it wont start unless i give it gas... i have to keep the gas pressed or it'll die on me automatically. when the car is running, with my foot on the gas, it sounds like its misfiring really bad... lucky for me, my friends work at discount auto and they helped me knock out some of the problems it might have been, but unfortunately, it wasn't any of them. replaced the map sensor, did nothing... so then we started to think it might be the distributor... we thought it might have been the module in the distributor, but when we tested it, it all came back saying the module was fine. we checked the coil, all the plugs were in fine... spark to all plugs... and the worst part about it was that the car wasn't spitting out any codes (only 12... but thats normal). disconnected the TPS and got a code, so we know the TPS is working, but when we disconnected the IAC, i noticed no difference in the behavior of the car, and i didnt get any codes either. checked the fuel pump, and every other relay on the car... those were good. i pretty much thought of everything to do and i can't figure out why i cant crank her up perfectly without touching the gas, and even then when i give it some gas, it sounds really REALLY bad, weird noises comming from the engine like if it's stuggling to stay alive. im telling you guys, the car was acting perfectly fine before this happened... it just took a dump at me all of a sudden without warning. i thought maybe my fuel pressure was too high (48), so i knocked it down and it still didn't help. only thing i could think of is the IAC since it didn't get any worse when i disconnected it. if anyone has had this problem or knows how i can fix it, please, let me know. the iroc's sitting in the discount auto parking lot till i can figure out how to get it working. any ideas or suggestions would be apriciated. i was going to replace the IAC but discount doesnt carry them, and the places that does wont let me return them if it isnt the IAC that's bad. thanks for all your help, im at the end of my rope trying to figure out whats going on with the iroc
Sounds like you lost a vacume line, make sure that they're all still connected and not rotted especial the ones for the pvc and the brake booster. 15 year old rubber lines tend to crack and suck air. Also if the motors making knocking noises i'd run a compression check to make sure everythings still moving in the long block, and check the timing too the dist might have been loose and rotated a bit
Another problem that i've had is the injecter harness melting on the manifold and blowing the fuse for one bank of cylinders so my car was only running on the 3 right side cylinders and it sounded like your problems so it probily woudn't hurt to check the injecter fuses
Fuel pumps will dump on you that quick, especially if your car spends a lot of time under the 1/4 tank mark. The pump won't have enough fuel on it to keep it cool and eventially craps out. It happened to me JUST like that. I pulled in to a parking lot, shut it off went in; came out and NOTHING, just cranked and cranked...
You say you checked the fuel pump??Can you hear it running, sounding like normal??If it sounds muffled or slow it can still be bad, not enough fuel.
Fuel filter, using the FI cleaner will sometimes clog them farily quickly..
The miss is most likely a LEAN MISS, normal for insufficient fuel flow.
My gut says FUEL PUMP...

fuel pump is 3 months old...
i think my afpr had something to do to it. i think i set it too high by accident. i know i set it at 48 psi before... but yesterday i decreased fuel pressure to see if it would start the car, but i didnt have the guage with me. today i went with the guage and it said 48, even after i turned it down. something's wrong here.... most vaccum lines are fine, but there's like one or two that are rotted but not bad enough for vaccum to escape, i think. ill check out the vaccum pressure when i go back in a few
took out the plugs and guess what i found? lmao. they were ALL covered in black, and with the threading compound i put on the threads (that or it's oil, i dunno... i doubt it's oil). looks like i was running rich? wouldn't that cause my car to misfire? lol

it was the IAC valve. car is running now, but it was bogging like crazy cuz i still had unburnt fuel left. now it's running alright, but not the same as it used to be. it isnt as strong as before. whenever i hit it in the car, it pulls, but, like i said, it doesnt pull as hard. is there anything i need to do to the IAC that could give me that lost power back? or is it something else like the plugs? thanks for all your help guys
You have to set up your IAC motor following specific steps, and it also should be done in conjunction with you TPS. If soemone else has the info handy great, but if not I can grab my book and walk you through it.
You don't set your IAC, you set your throttle blade opening, where changing the IAC would have NO effect on the "minimum air bleed" setting...
Check the fuel pressure and set it to 48psi with the vacuum line to it disconnected, that will simulate WOT and that's the pressure you're trying to set.

when i turn on the car, it feels weird... starts to bog out when i put it in drive or reverse, feels like it's misfiring, yet i have week old plugs in them. at WOT, it feels like im barely touching the gas...it doesnt really move... just cruises. wtffffffff is going on!?!? seriously im stumped
fuel pressure is set at 48... my friend thinks i flooded the engine with fuel because the plugs REEKED of gas when i took them out... what could be causing this?
ive never experienced a problem with the vaccum as far as i know... maybe this has to do with vaccum? how would i know what a vaccum problem feels like?
or maybe it's the timing? i looked at the crank and noticed it spinning pretty slow... i dont remember messing with the timing at all, what could be causing the crank to spin slowly? god, so many posibilities, yet i can't figure it out. if anyone's got any suggestions on what might be the problem, let me know... im going to check out everything till i get it right. thanks EVERYONE for their help... you dont know how much i apriciate it all

sounds like timing to me, i had a timing problem and it cooked my 02 sensor, heated up my headers so bad they turned blue for good, and warped for a nice header exhaust leak. it was off because the dealership didnt bolt down my distributor i think is what my mechanic told me
i pulled out the 02 for part of the time because it was my daily driver. my mechanic saved my engine from being cooked

First check the condition of your spark, you want a nice bright blueish-white spark. Anything that is orangey is bad!..And will cause fouling..
If you can borrow a coil, try it..yours is probably bad..
Oh, and don't try to claen fouled plugs and reuse them, you've got a 50/50 chance it won't work.
