Removing clearcoat on WS6 rims?

I'm considering removing the clearcoat on my WS6 rims over the winter. I don't think the person that had the car before me realized they were clearcoated and now they are foggy and not as shiny as they could be. The clearcoat is chipped off in couple places and looks really nice where I can see through!

I've done some searching here and on LS1.com and found some people that have talked about it and a few that say they've done it, but no follow ups.

Some people say it's not good to have no clearcoat on the rims. Can anyone verify this? I was thinking about stripping the clearcoat and then polishing up the aluminum. Anyone with any experience or insight, please chime in!

J

Any links to helpful sites would be great too!:D

If you remove the clear coat, brake dust will pit into the rims like crazy and be much harder to remove. I would just pay to have them re-cleared.

Hmm...that's not what I wanted to hear. I've heard that is almost as expensive as buying new wheels. Is that true?

I'm not sure what to do then...

I don't know pricess on that, but if your worried, compare several body shop prices and the price of new rims and see which one is more economical.

I was thinking about doing this to my painted ZR1's....I was gonna use a substance called Aircraft Remover...It would remove everything off the rim..clearcoat, paint,etc...I don't know if this is what your wanting or not...

i found a clear coat stripper that works pretty good

i have pics on the site if you want to see how they are turning out

i worked my way up to 1500 grit sanding in different directions then polished them for the shine
