Kappa based Nomad concept at NAIAS?!

The January issue of Car and Driver reports that Chevy will unveil a "new" Nomad concept in Detroit in afew weeks.

It won't have a V8 or be based on the SSR as we expected. It will be powered by a turbo Ecotec and as Chevy describes..."a new, flexible, hydroformed architecture designed for spirited driving"

Gentlemen....I believe we have the Chevy platform mate to the Solstice here!

no V8 it will e hard sell...and a competitor to the Malibu MAXX..

Nomad..is it going to be a sportback type of car?? like the Dode Razor??

There is a small picture of it. It looks like a small 2+2 sport wagon with a front end that looks like the original '54 Nomad Concept.

I'll make my final decision when I see it....but so far, I think that I like the '99 Nomad Concept better. It also looks like the '99 had better utility too.

No V8? God damnit.

I think it's fairly safe to break this now:

Kappa chassis does have components of the so-called "sigma-lite" also called "sigma-mass" chassis. You also heard me refer to this chassis as a "modular" chassis, which more accurately describes what it is.

This ability to make the chassis (not only it's front & rear suspension) in a "building block" fashion is what not only made the Solstice possible (it's production announcement is scheduled for January), but it's making other RWD vehicles of various sizes and design also possible.

Holden will be handling the vehicles considered "niche" because they can make these vehicles profitably, and there will also be a void when the next GTO is made here in North America (no, I didn't say specifically the US).

I know there are a series of RWD niche vehicles comming to the US, but no specific word on what they are. Nomad & Belair are 2 possibilities, the Chevy El Camino is a definate certainty, and it's depending on volume, there may be others.

Solstice will be out for the 2006 model year. We should also find out if Chevy's RWD sedan will be the next Impala (the goal of Chevy's former GM) or the Caprice (and idea that seems to have taken root since his departure).

BTW: This auto season it seems may be Buick & Chevrolet's turn in the limelight. (disclaimer: I am not implying Camaro will be on display...it won't, so don't read into this).

There is very big buzz about a Buick RWD coupe concept this year.

Grand National (name & car) is dead at Buick. It isn't coming back.

Chevelle (to date, anyway) is nothing more than a drawing idea for a Chevy version of the Monaro that debuted in Super Chevy magazine in the fall of 2000. Sure, GM owns the rights to that name, and Chevy can put it on any concept they want (perhaps one that is really a preview of a different car). But to date, there is no plan to use "Chevelle" on a production car.



BTW, I feel the need to add this here to clear something up for everyone:
Concept Car: This is exact as the name applies, it's a concept. Also means a design study. It IS NOT a preview of a upcoming car.
Production Preview: This is a preview of a actual car headed to production.

Seems that people are starting to confuse what a Concept Car and a Production Preview really are. The Chevy SS is a concept car. One would have to be doing serious drugs to think that actual car is headed to production. However, the theme of the body style will end up in production soon.

There are rare exceptions. The SSR was a concept. The public liked it so much it headed to production. The 300C & Magnum were called concepts, but they really were not. They were production previews. The new Mustang was a concept in that beyond it's basic body themes, it actually had little in common with the production Mustang.

Finally, not every car headed to production is previewed or shown as a concept. Automakers have styling clinics to get design feedback, so there is no need to display concepts at autoshows other than to gather a crowd at their displays, and get the public to look at what they are currently producing. That's it!

The C6 will have a Production preview next month, and there was never a concept displayed. It's possible the Camaro will come out the same way.

It's also possible it's "theme" may come out on a concept named Chevelle or Impala or perhaps even disguised in a Belair coupe or convertible or Nomad station wagon. ;)

Remember that article I posted back in October of last year which said Chevrolet was intrested in bringing back the Chevelle SS? (Link to thread) (http://web.camaross.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34499) I'm now convinced that any indications as such was just as intended cover just in case anyone got wind that Chevrolet intended to bring back the Camaro. If someone found out about a Chevrolet 2+2 RWD V8 coupe prior to a time and date in which the "C-word" could legally be mentioned, they could always claim they were looking at possibly bringing back the Chevelle as a companion car to the GTO/Monaro. The trademarking of "Chevelle" may have also been done to further cause confusion, just in case the secret leaked out premature.

Anyway, just speculation on my part, however, the pieces are begining to fall in place. :D

Buick will be getting the next useage of the Sigma platform in the '06 Buick Park Avenue(or replacement).

Not exactly what I would have liked to have seen at since Buicks are not "driver cars"

If Olds were still around it would have been really nice to have seen the next generation of the Aurora or Intrique on the Sigma platform.

Again... I love the originals, and yawn at the modern retromobiles.

I believe that is an official illustration from GM.
