I saw a red SSR parked across the street from my office today..(in fact I'm looking at it through the window right now)....and it looks cool. Nice color, nice stance....I like it.

I take back all the bad things I've ever said about it.:o

My local Chevy dealer has one :)

It's sitting outside in the cold! I don't know why they don't stick it in the showroom.
...unless maybe they have more than one?

I'll check it out :)

While we're on the subject......what's going on with BelAir/Nomad.

Prolly out there so people can see it from the street, and want to come in and check it (and other cars) out.

Here's what was said a year ago:
"We suggest putting the Bel Air convertible on that “bridge.” Right now, they’re still developing a business case for it. But it’s one of those cars that clearly say ‘build me!”

Ritter agrees. “Yes, I put Bel Air in that area of open air, fun, with a design that’s relatively uncluttered and will wear for a long time. I call them ‘blue blazer’ designs,” he says. “By that I mean you can wear ’em anywhere and you can wear ’em for a long time. That’s what they do. Fun is an indispensable part of a brand’s livelihood, I think. (When) we went to brand positioning, I think we got far too serious, with security-oriented positioning for our brands. People don’t want to be scared, they want to have fun.”
(Automotive Industries Magazine, January 2003)

If you haven't read that article, I reccomend everyone take a read. :)

My own pet theory is that Nomad & Belair will come out at the same time as limited production vehicles in the way the SSR is, only cheaper. The Nomad would be a "Station Wagon" version of the Belair. Both Belair & SSR are the same length (191"), both are based on a Trailblazer chassis, and I doubt anyone would have been able to make a business case for the SSR unless there was a bigger (and more profitable) purpose to it. Remember, even Corvette has to finance their own operations, something Oldsmobile got axed for being unable to do.

My info on it is over 8 months old, but a Belair-type car (if not the actual fathful car itself) is most definately in the pipeline.

Kurt Ritter, like Bob Lutz, used to frequently slip hints as to what was going on. Try this one from the same article:
"Ritter believes Chevrolet’s comeback will ride on the strength of reinventing some of the dash and verve that was a division trademark back when they sold snappy Bel Air hardtops and convertibles, Nomad sports wagons and big, reardrive Impalas.

Great article!

And here's a pic of one of the first "hotrodded" SSR's from SEMA:

Does precisely nothing for me.

I can think of many better ways to spend over $40,000 on a car...

... and all of them include "wickedly fast" in their description and have a Wreath and Crest or a set of crossed flags on them.

Oh, believe me....there is no chance that I'd ever drop over $40k on one....but today, it sure broke up the automotive landscape of grey Accords and white Tauruses.

I thought they were out. I saw a yellow one driving on the highway in Connecticut about a month ago. Wasn't impressed.

I saw one at a local auto show, and a dealer by me has one, I was impressed, it looks better in person, I wouldn't by it if I had the cash, but it would be a cool truck to ride around in.

Is it just me or does it seem like Chevy might have like 15 vehicles out soon. There will be all the normal ones plus the SSR, HHR, maybe Caprice, maybe Bel Air, maybe Nomad, and I think there is a possiblity of a few more. Not that I am complaining, I think it is great, I just am surprised.

They have an SSR by my place. While I think it "looks" different and it does in a way look nice (not that Im pointing out the proportions are off)?I feel this vehicle is just WAY over priced like the Pacifica and SS truck (before massive incentives) for what you get...And the new Caddy crossover.:barf:

Just my .02.....

At 10,000 units a year, we know that the SSR is not everyone's cup of tea.......and early on, I wasn't crazy about us spending the development dollars for the SSR.

With that said........

I've been driving a "Captive Fleet Development Vehicle" (units are built early and kept within the corp. to ensure that everything works as it should and to ensure the quality/reliability is there) for about 90 days now, and I can tell you that I've NEVER driven a vehicle that has gotten so much attention.

--not the 3rd gen Fbody (which, in itself got a ton of positive attention when it first hit the streets.......not the 4th gen, not the C4 or the C5.......... (all of which I thought got a ton of attention)

Pull into a 7-11 or a service plaza on the Ohio pike at 2:30 am and it gets surrounded...........people stop in their tracks during the daytime (and this is in Detroit where 'new stuff' is seen all the time.......)

Interestingly enough, the price is, at first blush, too high in my mind if I don't think about the costs associated with developing a new vehicle. However, when people ask me what the price is, more often than not, the answer is "well, that's not bad at all!" (which, if I didn't hear it as often as I do, I wouldn't believe it either........)

I guess it's because it doesn't look like anything else on the road......even close to anything else on the road......

The top is a sight to behold as it folds up into a very small space.....and people grin like little children as they watch. Even as we move the SSR into autoshows, the workers gather around it........and let's face it, they see just about everything.......

So.......will it be a success? And if so, for how long? Time will tell....but the reaction I've gotten thusfar over 90 days in several states is overwhelmingly positive.........

Opinion? Red is the best color............

$40 grand for the SSR isn't much when compared to the Silverado SS (also at 40, grand). ;)

BTW: If anyone is having trouble finding an SSR, Corimier (sp) Cheverolet, off the 405 in Carson has at least 5 of them. He has 5 on display on atop of his display building, visable from the freeway.

It has nothing to do with the lack of sales. This dealer is famous around LA for keeping 100 Corvettes in stock.......and no, I am NOT exagerating!

Only in LA. :D

I am not an SSR fan, but I can see why some people would like it...

The price is too high, IMO as well... BUT... at least GM has a low sales goal, and it does show they are willing to build 'niche' vehicles with realisitic sales figures...

I've seen a few, and I got to watch the hardtop in action at Bowling Green. It's really cool to watch, I must say. I still haven't decided if I like it or not, although I definitely like the interior. :thumb: I suppose it is nice to see something that actually looks different and, in my opinion, not hideous (like so many other new vehicles) on the road. So far I like it in black the best.

They look good (as long as you like retro) and the retractable hardtop is cool. I bet if it came with 400HP and a 6 speed manual it would have been praised around here. Not everyone has HP as high on the priority list as us Camaro fans.
