Drove my dad's 94 396 yesterday

Well, we are happy w/ the results all things considered.

My dad went 12.04 @ 115 on a 1.9 60ft (he needed a bigger burnout). He let junior take it for a ride and here's the slip:

60ft 1.664
1/8et 7.424
1/8mph 97.2
1/4et 11.52
1/4mph 115.8

The 1/8 to 1/4 mph is low because we were maxing out 3rd gear on his th400 w/ 4.10's and 26" tires. For next season, he's going with a 9" and a 3.42 so we should see 120-121 traps and maybe high 10's. I launched at 3/4 throttle then hammered it but still had a little wheelspin. We didn't play with any of the hal 12 ways either and we left the airbag at 14lbs so we have some suspension tuning to do as well.

All in all, it will go high 10's at 120 or so in the spring for sure! We were super impressed and this is from a car that makes 344 rwhp on a mustang dyno (mine made 347 btw). Shows you what peak numbers mean compared to area under the curve. My dad's car is a full-weight street car with ac, heat, all seats, stereo, etc! It probably has a 3700 lb raceweight or so...nonetheless, we are mega impressed!

Wait for next season...

He didn't just need a bigger burnout, he needed a bigger set of cahoones. I was afraid of breaking the stock 10 bolt rear, so I candyassed it off the line. LTLHOMER is younger and more of a risk taker (especially with Dad's wheels) ;)
We were both very impressed with the car's torque. It pulled hard from the start and didn't stop until it hit the rev limiter.
Speedworks did a Helluva job on the dynotune. I was a little bummed about the numbers, but after yesterday's performance, I know it's just not a Dynoqueen, it's a workhorse.
Hat's off to Speedworks.

Good job.. I'm a firm believer that track #'s are all that matters, and you've got 'em! Good job :D

Way to go. Sounds like the thing is hauling butt. Maybe try a 28 inch tall tire before the gear change? Just a suggestion.

Good suggestion. That's a lot easier to do than experiment with different gear ratios right off the bat. I was debating a 3.42 or 3.73 prior to the weekend to improve drivability. On the way to Lapeer, we were passed by every old lady and 18 wheeler on the road as I tried to stay around 3200rpms (~55mph). :yuck:

BTW, are you the Vince that LTLHOMER bought the TH400 from?
We're looking forward to having both 94z's up and running in the spring. Having run an 11.5 in my car, he's got a new bogie to shoot at now.

Yep that would be me. Sean is a really nice guy. As his father you should be proud. The Spring should be allot of fun for you guys. With the new set up; transbreak and direct port NOS His car will easily run in the 10's but the 11.50 NA is a really nice time slip. Today I have a pile of 10 sec and two 9 sec naturally aspirated slips but those first milestones are really important to me. Enjoy and we are going to have allot of fun next year. BTW your converter must be kinda loose. 3200rpm at 55mph and only 115mph with a 3rd gear of 1:100 is telling me there is quite a bit of slippage. That could be why your dyno numbers seem a bit low.

Best of luck

Vince

Thanks Vince. I've very proud of Sean. I think you're right about my torque convertor. While it will move in stop and go traffic at an idle, under even light-moderate throttle the shift from 2-3 barely drops the rpms at all. That tells me that there's lots of slop in it, right? While my sig says vigi, it is actually a custom-made Precision according to the car's builder. It is pinkish/purple, though. :-)

Sean and I both look forward to making the mods that you suggested to him. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards not finishing up the direct port NOS injection system on mine and going NA only. I'll save my bottle and NOS controller for "the kid".

Great times!:thumb:

Also, very cool that father & son are in it together:). My dad and I are both into building our cars, and we're having fun egging each other on as to who has or will have the faster car!! (as of right now, I beat my dad at the track this summer, but we just sorted out a HUGE fuel delivery problem on his car yesterday, and he's buying a set of slicks for next summer, so basically our 13.6 - 13.6 tie is going to be about 12.6 to 13.6 for him!:().

It's funny that the "young punk" driver got the better time though!!:p Same thing happened when my dad and I went to the track..............I kept crossing the line first in my car, then we switched cars and I beat my dad in my car while I was driving HIS car!!!:D It was funny!;)

What LTLHOMER failed to mention is that "Dad" has made exactly 3 runs in the past 25 years, all of them in the 12's and all of them this season.
But that's OK; I enjoy watching him drive and would rather see him do better than me.

:D

The term that I use for the condition your converter is in is "driving through the converter". The torque never catches up to the engine speed and it just drags along. Performance can be improved with a tighter converter but it will also make the car a little tougher to drive as you will be putting more power to the ground. The make of the converter doesn't matter in this case. Its just a little loose. send it back to precision and have them tighten it a little.
Sean is luckey to have a father who is so kind as to donate Nitrious accessories to him. luckey guy! Take care
