hey guys my car is an 83 lg4 with 87,000 on it. i bassically bought it with this much, and when i got it i changed the oil to the mobil high mileage stuff (which is a "sythetic blend"). now the car is going to be stored for a few months (maybee driven once in a while) but i wanted to change the oil so it doesnt become acidic and corosive, but i wanted to know if i could switch back to regular mobil 5w-30 becasue its not a "full sythetic" its just a "blend"?
its half as much $
and i hardly have 30 miles on the last oil change (although it was at the begining of the summer)
summary
Can i switch between sythetic blend and regular?
5w-30 good to put in it for storage(i know its suposed to be good for winter at least)? or should i always be using 10w-30 in my lg4?
Should i Change the filter too? (based on how little its been used i would think that it isnt nesessary for this oil change) (even if i dont change the filter i will empty the old one to get the old stuff out then reuse it)

Alot of times when you switch to synthetic blend on an older engine the oil tends to find its way past the seals because the synthetic is alot more "slippery" than a conventional oil. And while your under there change the filter, its only a couple dollars!

dam it!!! no wonder i started leaking oil after i changed it. but... i thought that stuff was supposed to help the seals? why did it leak more? i was able to slow the leaking alot by tightening the oil pan bolts becasue the bolts did seem loose anyway.
but
what about switching back and forth between them?
do you recomend staying with the regular stuff? (it diddnt have a problem with the regular oil, but i just figured the high mileage stuff would be "better".
what weight should i run 10w-30 all the time in my car or should i put in the 5w-30 for winter.

you can change back and forth between synthetic and nonsynthetic oils, just as long as they are for automotive use. some high dollar race sythetic oils will not mix with dino oil.
if the oil in your car has no more than 30 mi on it, there is no reason to change it.

The Syntheic is actually thinner then normal oil. So it will go through the seals easier than reg oil.

Even though they have the same viscosity, synthetic oils (like Mobile1 10w30) are thinner than conventional oils.
At 12K miles my new engine developed an oil leak when I swithched to sythetic. I fixed the leak, and I've never looked back. Oh, if anyone has read you can't go back to conventinal oil after running sythentic...
Well, I put something I read by Vizzard into practice. He claimed from his experiences that a 1:1 mix still had over 75% of the better properties of synthetic oil. Mobile1 says their synthetic is compatible with conventional oil too, so I've been making my own blend. I haven't had any problems from it, and no leaks have developed because of it.
It's only been about 12K miles I've been doing this, but no problems of any kind. Figured I'd pass this along.

And as far as I know, all these "High Mileage" oils for 75k+ are just thicker oil.
I went to 10W-40 in the summer and that stopped my horribly leaking valve seals. Now that it's winter, I can get away with 10W-30.

I used to think that the "high milage" oils were also thicker, but they have better additives in them to recondition old seals.
