Best drag radial tire size?

I was thinking of purchasing a set of drag radial tires (either Nitto's or BFG's) for the track and was wondering what size would give me the most traction (I want to lower my 60' s as much as I can)?

I could mount them on 16" x 8" salad shooters and have 245/50 which would give me more sidewall and the rims would be lighter. on the other hand, I could mount them on 17" x 9.5" rims that I have and I would get a bigger patch for increased traction however the rim would weigh more and less sidewall also and they would be more expensive.

Which are better?
Is there a good combination that someone can recommend?

is the car an auto or stick....how much power does it make?

will these be for track use only?

If they are just for the track use get some 255/50/16 BFG drs. I have them on salad shooters for the track and I also have 275/40/17 Nitto dr's on ZR1's for the street. I've run with both at the track and the BFG's hook up better than the larger Nittos. You want a taller sidewall for more flex for drag racing. I got wheel hop sometimes with the 275 Nitto's, I never get any hop with the 255 BFG's plus they are lighter. Also I run them with 17-18lbs of pressure.

You can't lose with either, the Nitto's will last a little longer than the BFG's but you may give up a bit of traction for them. Either way, go for the 16" tire.

I've had good luck with the Nitto's, cut 1.7x's consistently.

just to add my own opinion.....i dont know why anyone has a problem with 17 inch Nittos....my car doesnt make a whole lot of power but IT HOOKS on the 17s without any wheelhop at all..ive gone 1.6X 60 foot a bunch of times on those tires...

Just to add more info...

My car is pretty much stock for now, 6-speed tranny and stock 3.42 gearing. However next year I will be adding some bolt ons (might go to 4.10's).

Either way it looks like I will be going for the 255/50/R 16 size tires mounted on salad shooters.

Thanks for the advice!
