kevkop94TA 11-16-2003, 08:09 PM I'm looking to get a set of drag wheels. Preferably 16in. so I don't have to grind my calipers and I can still use my BFG DR's for the time being, but everywhere I check it only seem they have 15in. What/where should I look for?
Thanks guys.

Bogart makes some very nice 15" rims that will fit a 4th gen without grinding the calipers. Light, nice looking too. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive. However, a 15" tire will hook up better and the combo will be lighter than a 16", all else being equal.

kevkop94TA 11-16-2003, 09:20 PM Yeah I really don't think i have the money for Bogarts  Though they are awesome wheels.
matt104a 11-16-2003, 10:10 PM You can try used draglites off of ebay, i saw a set of 4 the other day for $200!
revtime 11-16-2003, 11:52 PM Weld Pro Star XPs.
They are a little heavier than the standard Pro Stars but the XPs are a bolt on with no modifications.
mongse_1 11-17-2003, 07:13 PM Draglites will require grinding and XPs are pretty much useless as a drag wheel because of their weight.
You can get a 7.5" wide Centerline Convo Pro/ET that will fit over LT1 brake calipers w/o a problem.
kevkop94TA 11-17-2003, 08:03 PM What about the standard ProStars? I found these on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2443246770&category=43956
Are they somewhat lighter than the XPs? I emailed the seller asking if the backspacing would work.
kevkop94TA 11-18-2003, 12:28 AM Well he added the specs to the auction, but he wasn't sure whether it would work on my car.
FRONTS 16X8-5.5" BACKSPACE. REAR 16X8-4.5" BACKSPACE
Will they fit okay, and will they look decent i.e. not sticking out too far? I don't mind if the rears stick out a little, and I would probably end up just selling the fronts, cause I dont want 8" on the front.
Raptor1 11-18-2003, 07:15 AM The backspacing on a factory '94 T/A swirl wheel is 6.5". The ones you're thinking about buying will stick out 2" father than your stock wheels. Personally, I think it would look kind of ricey. But that's just my opinion. Oh yeah, the tires may rub the upper fender well lip going over larger bumps too.
kevkop94TA 11-18-2003, 08:51 AM :yuck: Thanks for the heads up man. Now I know what backspacing to look for too.
mongse_1 11-18-2003, 10:13 AM Normal backspacing for 4th gens are:
8" wheel - 5.5" backspacing
10" wheel - 7.5" backspacing
This will apply to any wheel, give or take a .5"

The newer 5 spoke T/A wheels may be 5.5" backspacing, but the older 93/94 swirl wheels are 6.5". I've measured it more than once just to be sure.
Yes, 5.5" backspacing will work fine too.
mongse_1 11-18-2003, 06:14 PM I was thinking aftermarket wheels. For instance, Centerlines can come in a 7.5" wide wheel w/ a 5" backspacing. Welds come in an 8" w/ a 5.5" b/s.
Didn't know there was a difference between the 5-stars and the salad shooters.
kevkop94TA 11-20-2003, 12:05 PM Well what if I went 15" up front and just left the salad shooters in the rear. Whats the best size to use, also would any besides the Bogarts fit W/O grinding? I don't mind using longer studs and a spacer if need be.

I've got a set of Welds for my car. I had to use a 7/16" spacer to get them on without grinding the calipers.
Raptor1 11-20-2003, 01:19 PM If you're only going to put them on the front and for drag race use only, Weld Draglite 15" x 3.5" with 1.75" back spacing and 5/16" spacers will work without grinding the calipers. You will need longer studs to be safe. I use ARP 12mm x 1.5", part number 100-7708 through Summit.
kevkop94TA 11-20-2003, 08:24 PM Yeah I'd be using them for drag only. I mean it would be ok to drive on them to and from the track though, right? As long as I don't drive like a maniac? :)

As long as the road is relatively straight and smooth ;) These rims bend easy, so hiting a pot hole, or even rough road, while going around a corner can ruin them. That's why Weld specifically states, "FOR DRAG RACE USE ONLY".
JWINN 11-22-2003, 12:14 AM I run these frt runners and street use is a big plus with me.

revtime 11-22-2003, 10:12 PM I agree not to use Front runners on the street they will break going around a corner and trash your car.
XPs are heavier than regular pro stars but they are still lighter than my salad shooter / bridgestone combo.
mongse_1 11-24-2003, 04:00 PM I drove a set of Convo Pro fronts from St. Louis to Memphis before. If you've ever travelled I-55 down to Memphis, it's not the smoothest road ever made.
JWINN, even I'd be hesitant about running those on the streets and I run Bogarts. :D They kinda look like Welds, but I can't place them. I know I've seen them before.
kevkop94TA 11-24-2003, 08:21 PM So it wasn't too bad then? Its not bad going to my track. 90% of the ride is down the garden state parkway. I don't think it'd be too bad on them.

I've got the other Centerline wheel, the Telstar. I daily drive them in the summer. For an LT1 car, they're direct fit. No spacers, no grinding. LS1's you've got to do some caliper grinding.
JWINN 11-25-2003, 12:40 PM You girls must drive your car's on some of the worst streets in the United States! I have drove these wheels on public roads for some time with no problems. Now if your doing corners like a formula one car or hiting pot holes then no explanation would be required why you have bent wheels.
I had a drag car with spindle mount frt wheel and I drove this on the street for years without tacoing then if I hit a small bump and if anyone has ever seen a spindle mount rim it is even lighter then the rim I currently have in the pic. A rim that is for drag race use only is the legal disclaimer for the retards that want to use the rim as they would as there OEM rim, beating the **** out of it.
Be carefull with a drag wheel on the street and you will not have any problems but if you are a young senseless kid that wants a drag wheel that has the strength of a road race wheel,4X4 wheel and so on then nothing will hold up for you. I would suggest buying circle track steel rims because at $50.00 or less a rim you then can afford to act like a retard with them.
Advice to live by,
Jim
Lets RACE!!!
mongse_1 11-25-2003, 02:52 PM You definitely haven’t seen the wonderful work MODOT and IDOT does on the highways.
I had no problems w/ my Convo Pros. The car actually ran better in the rain w/ the skinnies than w/ a wide tire. :D

Are you kidding me I live in Michigan. You know snow, snow plows, bad roads. Just drive with sense and never drive slicks in the rain.
Good advice to follow!
Jim
I have centerline warriors 15x10's on the back and 15x4.5 on the front and I didnt have to grind the calipers

yep, lots of street miles there...
I bet I've got 20,000 miles on my prostars and I've never bent a wheel. just don't drive like an idiot and you'll be fine.

Preachin to the choir man. I’ve been running skinnies for the last 3 years and never bent a wheel. My Convo Pros were perfectly round and my Bogarts had no problem w/ a country road @ 50mph. :)

Attention to detail is always good to have when your trying to see what kind of car the other guy had! New car new rims and tires.
