Possible Tranny Prob?
Possible Tranny Prob?
Ok, hears the deal...noticed a roar coming from the rear end...tore the axles out, poked prodded and listened...seams its the pinion bearing. Put the axles back in tonight (going to the shop...scared of setting up gears here and gunna have 'em put in 3.73s while its apart). While turning the axles after they were back in (c-clips and all installed) I discovered that with the car in nuetral it is faily easy to turn the axles by hand forward, it takes significant effort to turn them backwards (backwards as if the car was rolling backwards). Additionally, there is a slight squeel coming from the tail shaft housing of the tranny when I turn them forward, but quite while spinning them backwards. Just bought the car a few weeks ago and this is the first time I've been around a 4L60E. Is this of any concern? BTW, its a 97 A4. Thanks in advance......
Thats normal. When it spins freely, the Lo-Roller is overruning. When you turn it the other way, the Lo-Roller locks and forces other members in the tranny to spin, which causes the increased resistance. The noise you hear is the lo-roller clutch overrunning. Its all normal.
