Hey everyone, I am new to the audio scene so I thought you guys could help me out. I have an 84 Z. Right now the speakers in my car are stock and I am missing the radio. I want to get a new headunit, and new speakers up front and in the rear. In time I also want to get an amp, 2 10 or 12 subs and equalizer. I mostly listen to rap and rock. What would be a good setup for me? What brands would I go with? I am not lookin to shake houses from a miles away but I want a good system and I am willing to spend money to get something decent. Thanks.
Mike

Good post. Lots of needed info answered. You say your willing to spend the money for sound quality, but can you set a dollar figure? I gotta know a point I can aim for to recommend specific models. But I'll shoot out some price ranges for you.
Nice head unit= $275-$375
Front components= $110 and up
Rear speakers=$100
high power 4-channel amp=$300
high power sub amp= $350
quality pair of 12"s=$275 and up
EQ= too variable to price. depends what you want.
Wiring and RCAs=$100
and you better be doing the install yourself!:)

Well I guess I could set a dollar amount. I will probably have around 1k to work with. Would that be enough to get a decent system. I will be doing this in time so the first things I would do are deck and front and rear speakers. Then I want to build a sub box for 2 10's or 12's, amp and eq. For my system I would probably like to to be more bass oriented :D
Yeah I want to do the install myself or with some friends :D It would be nice to learn a thing or two and to save on the installation costs.
I have another question. The previous owner had a cd deck in the car but he ripped it out and there is now a big wiring mess. How hard is it going to be to wire everything up since I cant use one of those wiring harness adapters?
Also I was looking at some headunits today. Is the Pioneer DEH-P6500 good?

Good price on a good deck. I think you'll be happy with it. You should have no problems wiring the new head unit without a harness, provided ALL the stock wires are still even there! Ok, with that budget you might want to think about a 5 channel amp to power your whole system. Save some money on the amps. I recommend the Kicker KX700.5

a 5 channel amp? if he wants 2 10s or 2 12s I dont think i 5 channel amp would give him enough power to both the subs

If you don't want to go with either of these routes...... you figure:
$185 for JBL BP600.1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055285398&category=18797)
$120 for JBL P80.4 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055040185&category=4950)
$180 for the Pioneer head unit
$88 for Infinity reference components (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3054105098&category=32818)
$52 for Infinity Reference 6x9's (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055206563&category=14942)
$130 for Alpine Type-S subs (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055337774&category=18803)
$40 for box building materials.
$100 for wiring, RCAs, battery terminals and connectors
add in shipping for all that and you at exactly $1000. And that, my friends, is my super duper budget system! :D
