How Can I Tell If This Is A Ford 9 Inch or A 8.8 Rear

I have a old 85 lincoln that i am parting out. It has a posie rear. With disc brakes on it.I was told that it might have a 9 inch rear or 8.8 But it has a rear cover plate on it. and i was not sure that they made the 9 inch with a rear cover plate. So i was thinking that it was a 8.8 instead. If this is not the case how can i other wise tell which rear end this is.Just by looking at it. Thanks For Your Time.......... Mike...

I'm no expert on Ford rears or anything but I've seen a few 9" rears and they do not use a rear cover, the center section bolts on from the front and the whole center section is removable. I know the 8.8's are designed more like a GM 10 or 12 bolt with the removable rear cover, I would say it's probably an 8.8.

Some people are actually using ford 8.8 rears in their fbodies by swapping our axle tubes over to the 8.8 center section along with some other fabrication so someone here may be interested in it. I would try listing it in the for sale section here and mention that conversion, someone may be interested in it. I would think it could be worth a couple hundred at least.

Try Selling it on the Ford Sites. Everyone with a new (99 - 2004) Cobra might show interest. They are swapping out the IRS in those cars for a solid axle.

I understand that this is an ancient post, but I have an answer just in case you're still interested. If you can fit a socket over the bottom two center section bolts, it's an 8.8". If only a box-end wrench will fit, it's a 9."

Sorry for digging up old posts...

It could very well be a Ford 7.5" axle too. The Fox body Mustangs came with the 7.5 rear until '85.
