Taking cars off the road

Hi all,

Just curious why I hear so many people taking their Camaro's off the road on the West coast? I mean, I can understand out East where they get a whole bunch of snow / ice, and theirs always salt on the road.

But out here winter it is so mild, there are only a few days that are harsh (salt, slush, etc).

I drive my car all year and as long as I keep it clean it doesn't seem to adversly affect it. Am I missing something?

I put mine away cause I don't wanna have any chance of corosion. That and acid rain over time does eat away at the clearcoat.

That and my wipers don't work. Its fun driving the car in the rain bit everyone else forgets how to drive once the ground is wet. I'd rather keep the garage aroiund this time of year.

i uninsure mine just cuz it has summer performance radials on it. Plus i dont wanna kill myself when it does snow
Some cars on here also make lots of power which wouldnt be the funnest thing to drive around in when its really wet, or snow, slut, etc

If I had a second car, I would consider garaging my 99 Z28 during the winter here... In my town near portland, it rarely snows here... but it constantly rains and rains and rains during the winter.. I have no problems driving in the rain, with good tread on my tires.. but it gets old. If I'm going to have to drive "normally", I might as well be in more comfort and get better gas milage? But, my Camaro is my one and only daily driver.

There's this guy at work with a Yellow C5 Vette, and it seems like he drives it all year round too.

Heh, tirerack sent me a winter tire catalog.. Did you know they make nobby snow and mud tires for C5 wheels? $300 per snow/mid tire.. lmao.

I guess it's just preferance. In Toronto I had a second car for beating around in the crap weather.

I guess if I had the $$$ for extra insurance and parking I would consider it. Hmmm... once the ex finally get's out of my place I'll have an extra spot.

I just have a tendancy to shovel money into whatever car I drive - even if it is a beater.

I take mine off cause it sucks to drive in the rain :) Also people suck at driving when the weather changes ;) and I don't want someones mistake to damage my car.

Man does it ever get slutty sometimes here in Chilliwack.....I mean one year there was so much sluttiness going on a person couldn't walk down the street without getting some on you.......

I have garaged my car every winter since I've owned it.
I have an couple of extra vehicles so its not a big deal.

I take anything I care about off the road in the winter to avoid salt ( I dont wash my cars often enough) and to bring out some beater that I can stuff into a snowbank and not care :D . Dry weather a V8 is lots of fun but its no fun at all in the rain. In the wet/snow though a beater is more fun for me as I like to get things sideways. Good tries are too expensive to spin up in the rain too (it tempers them). Having said that I am without a car to take off the road this year anyhow.

It was :D . From day one the camaro was just a driver. I drove it through 2 winters (although one was with a 267ci). Looking at how easy it is to get a paint job done on it I should have done it long ago but oh well. Damned car.

My Camaro is a toy. Even in the summer, I rarely drive it to work, it's just something I take out for fun and a little racing at the track. Even in the summer I much prefer my 'beater' for tavelling and commuting.

My 02 f-body will be coming off the road pretty soon. Some great reasons posted why and I agree with them. Some people think they can drive just as fast in the slippery weather therefore rendering it very dangerous and alot more accidents in this climatic weather. Corosion, acid rain, salt, contaminants and just try to keep your car clean, impossible. Wash it one day, dirty the next. You also track all that dirt and water in your interior. I have a truck to drive in the winter and I'll give my firehawk about 10 coats of polish over the winter so when spring comes I'll have a trophy winning shine like Larry.
