I just got my 383 tunnel ram dual 660 holley carb motor fired up and when I shut it off, white smoke comes out of the carbs, is this normal with a tunnel ram or is it a valve lash problem? Or timing? Or carb tuning issue?

Over lap from the cam on big cam motors will hang open the valves and with the use of a tunnel ram usually the fuel will run down the intake runner and on to the back side of the valve or inside the cylinder in which case when it is hot thus creating the white smoke.

OK thats what i thought, just makin sure its not somethin horribly wrong :) Need to work out some kinks, like the fact that it dies when u put it in gear :) And I cant get the idle to go down below 2000rpm, carbs seem to have the blades at a 2000rpm minimum, cant close em more than they're closed now.

Carbs, YUK! Before you beat your head against the ground if the car is dying when you come to a stop you may want to check your converter. I had a 383ci with more cam then it needed and when I would come to a stop it would die because I didn't have the correct torq converter for the cam.
If your going to use carbs you should call Pro Systems for some of his carbs. They are the cat's meyow!

Well the carbs are good, they came off a big block running 8.90's, converter is way loose, its just a tuning issue, my friends 350 with a 225 duration cam was doing it till we got the timing right, I went out n bought a good timing light to check total advance, his was at 55, set it to 35 n car runs beautifully, mine's at 32 right now so I'll put some more in it and set the idle air/fuel mixture etc
I'm getting it dyno tuned at 750 miles at Vinci HiPerformance in town www.vincihiperformance.com but I just needa get it to a condition where it can be driven for those 750 miles :)

If your running a high duration cam (250+) you need to crack open the secondary throttle plate so it will idle below 2000 rpms. If your using a Holley carb there is a provision (set screw) to crack open the secondaries slightly for idle purposes, if not, then you can drill a small hole in the secondary plates (start with a 1/64 drill bit) and drill more if necessary.

uhhh if its idling at 2000rpm I would want to CLOSE the throttle more, not open it more or drill holes in it! that would raise up the idle even more.
but anyway its fixed now, the rod connecting the 2 carbs together was adjusted too short so the front carb was holding open too far when the rear carb was at the positive stop.
the carbs are a 1:1 linkage so the secondaries open with the primaries. but idle is at 950 now, just needa mess with the idle a/f screws.

By allowing more air into the secondaries it allows the engine to idle better with a high duration cam. Your base idle speed does not increase. That's why Holley carbs provide the adjustment screw for the secondary throttle blades........You need to pick up a Holley carb manual for reference.........
