How loud would it be if....

How loud (read that badass-sounding) would it be if I un-bolted the pipes from behind the cats, and ran some custom pipes maybe a foot or so from the cats, angled them a little downward and outward from beneath the car, and left it open? Exit would be maybe even with front of each door. Wouldn't really stick out from the car either, I've got ground FX, so clearance would be an issue. Comments? Suggestions?

How loud? Very!

Probably even louder than running an open cutout all the time. Will get very tiring in the long run. Especially if you drive longer distances.

Unless you like that kind of sound and interior noise, of course...

exiting there you probably wouldn't even be able to open the windows without hurting your ears.

and you 'd probably not even be able to hear the radio over the interior resonance

Some states have rules on the exhuast exiting before the rear wheels.

I say there's no way you could actually drive around every day like that:no:. A) you'd have cops chasing you everywhere, and B) it would simply be WAY too loud?!

I remember firing up the 383 in my '81 with open headers when my dad and I first installed it into the car, and Holy $hyte!?!?!:eek: It was LOUD!!!:thumb: There's no way I could've actually driven the car around like that though........maybe it's just me, but there are limits to everything, and some times too much is simply too much, and less is more:cool:.

There is no such thing as TOO LOUD. My car runs Longtubes through an offroad pipe to a cutout. Thats loud. If your still running cats your car will be a little louder than a car with a cutout.

a little off subject, but Capn' Pete, how did you run a 13.4 with 2.73's?

our cars are similar but my best time is only a 13.6 (thought it was with a broken motor mount and tranny mount)

Yes only a little off topic. :D Its quite normal to get a mid 13 out of an LS1 with 2.73s. Perhaps you just need to practice launching the car to get minimal spin off the line and also run your car in better conditions ie temprature, humidity, elevation, all play a factor.

hmmmm....
This is very interesting. OK... how about instead of just ending after the cats, you ran a couple of those bullet mufflers or resonators or something, and exited just behind the rear wheels... still keeping a true-dual setup?

And would that be what he should tell the judge when he is in traffic court on a no muffler violation? If it's a track only car then I agree 100% that there is no such thing as too loud.

But street drivin cars have to pass cops from time to time. My dynomouth isn't near as loud as a cutout w/o cats and I've been stopped once for my car being too loud. Fortunately I didn't get a ticket but I did get a warning to go get a "real" muffler.

I agree with most of the people here that it would be ear bleeding loud and likely to get on your nerves and get you in trouble with local police. But that sounds sweet for a track only car. If you drive on the street then I like the true duals idea with the bullet mufflers coming off headers and an X-pipe.

Good Luck

I dunno? LS6 intake maybe?! :p

Actually, I haven't been able to match that time ever since, but if you see the date, it was back in May when the temps were still cool, but I've been twice since, and my average runs are 13.6's. I'd like to go once more before the end of this season (again, when the temps/humidity are better) and if I bought a good set of tires for the back, I could probably cut even lower than 13.4's (maybe even close to ROBVAS's 13.06!!:thumb: ).

DARREN, I agree 100% with what you said. Nothing is "too loud" at the track, but on the street, there is a limit --- both for ride/sound quality's sake, and also for the cop's sake;).
