i posted a topic on this a while back, but did not get many responses.
Can the 3rd generation door panels be taken apart? What I mean is the cardboard backing being separated from the upper trim? What about the carpet being separated from the cardboard?
The carpet on my door panels are in absolute excellent shape. The only problem is that the cardboard on the rear side is cracking, and even busted in some areas (the upper trim busted through the cardboard in a couple of places).

Well, i foud out the hard way when it comes to this.
The panels CAN be removed from the black plastic moulding. Those small round washer looking thigs can actually be gently screwed or pryed off (VERY GENTLY!!!) They are sort-of backwards in how they are on there, it's not the way you'd expect them to be put on...you'll see what i mean.
With the carboard, i've never tried. But perhaps it would be easiest to try and replace it with 1/4" wood paneling or maybe even 1/8" plexiglass??? It would be quite the pain to do, but i'm sure it woud last much longer and give you a much sturdier surface to remount the carpeting. Hope it works out well. Post some more pics!

I was desparate to get the thing back on (so I could have an arm rest... and also make it a little harder to break into the car) so I just slapped it back on.
When I get out of college (and these apartments) hopefully Ill have a garage to work in (and not a parking lot). Until then, all I can do is just put the thing back on and hope it stays together. Maybe if I run into a set of panels that are for sale, I can just buy them.

maybe for the moment you can just reinforce the cardboard by putting strips of wood or stiff cardbord behind it?
Post pics of where they're broken, etc.
There's nothing that can't be done in a parking lot! Haha.

The reason why I brought up the parking lot sitch is because the car got broken into a week ago... cant wait until I have my own 4 car garage.

yeah, i saw those pics...that's what made me wonder...
the backing looks good on 'em...where is it bad??? It is a 91, after more than 10 years i don't know how much structural integrity you can expect from cardbaord! Haha
they're pretty bad in my '88 bird, but i just got plenty of the plactic pegs to hold it tight against the door.
:D Reload those pictures again. I just put some arrows where the bad spots are.
The cardboard is indeed pretty strong - it is just those couple of spots that are bad.
As well as where the top filler attaches to the main panel.
