What other cars use same rear end as 1983?

I am looking for gears and a posi to replace the existing non posi and 2.73s. The 3.42 would be perfect but I am guessing it will only be in manual tranny t/a or z.28. What about a posi unit? Do any of the 2nd gen years swap?

i think anything from 82-92 gears will work with the proper carrier but nothing from the 2nd gen because they are 8.5" rears not 7.5 or whatever the 3rd gens are. i know the 3.42 gears are pretty common in the 3rd gens though. what i did and you can do it also if you wish is find an open rear 3.42 axle assembly and buy a posi unit it for it. if they are still available you can get a stock one out of a 4th gen from slp or slponline.com its a standard zexel-torsion unit and works pretty good. the only thind you may have to do is switch the axles over to the 28 splines if the rear you find is a 26 spline. what i did is found a 3.42 out of an 85 iroc (5.ol tpi a4) with the aluminium drums for 50 bux cause it wasnt posi and then bought the posi from slp for 100 bux and then switched the axles from a 91 2.73 rear that i was replacing and i had a 3.42 posi rear wiht the alum drums for less than 200 bux. im not sure if you could find this stuff for the same prices but you should be close if you shop around.

hope this helps,
