12 Bolt vs 9 Inch Rearends

I need to order a Rearend for the TTA as the stock one is just about dead.

The 9 Inch is about $1500-$1700 and the 12 Bolt is about $2500-$2700 bucks.

What I want to know is if the 12 Bolt is worth the extra $1200 bucks as I am leaning towards the 9 at this point for $$$ sake.

Not as strong as a 9 inch. I know of a 12 in a 9 second street car and it's fine so I'm not to worried about that. I have an auto which is alot easier on the driveline than a stick.

So basically I want to know how much heavier is a 9 Inch?

And how much more power does it take to turn a 9 vs a 12? Is it 5hp or 50hp?

Spending an extra $1200 bucks for 5hp isn't worth it to me.

Personally I like the 9" and I'll tell you why I'm going to use one in my car.

1. Your not going to break it, or your going to have a hard time doing it

2. As far as weight goes, you can get them lighter than the 10 bolt if you do it right and want to spend the money to do it. With a stock housing, alum. center section and a regular sized axle (31 or 33) it shouldn't be that far off from a 10 bolt....and probably a little lighter than the 12 bolt

3. You have a lot more opitions as far as diffs go with the 9". You can get what ever your heart desires for a diff where as the 12 bolt you are limited.

4. It isn't going to zap that much power, I think I have seen guys say it might cost you 2-8hp to turn one over what a 12 bolt will. For the relibility it offers I would think that its worth it.

5. Parts are very easy to come by with a 9"

Where do you get a 9 inch for $1500-1700 that bolts in?

Going by his sig, its going in a 3rd gen....ala no ABS so I would think you could do it very cheaply if you didn't spend a lot of money on lighter parts

A full Moser housing with everything but the center section is $950. And fully assembled centers can go from $500-2000 depending on if you get it new or used, alum. or iron, and what kind of diff you get. So it would be possible to get one for under $2k

A 9" rear is 3% less efficent than a 12 bolt roughly.

I got my 9" for $1,850 complete...Moser housing and 31 spline axles, Hrw Nodgular pumkin with 4:11s, Locker, HD pinon support and the 1330 Yoke.

as far as it killing Hp I lost Nothing going to the 9" at all according to track times.

I was going to get a 9", but it doesn't support 3 channel abs.

The rearends are about the same price if well prepared. ;)

You loose about 9% HP with a 12bolt and 12% with a 9" and that 3% more can be a lot that's 15hp on a 500hp car. An entry level 12bolt is stronger then an entry level 9" but the 9" has the potential to be stronger and has a lot more options. From what I've seen prices don't differ that much between units. Unless you are going over 800ish HP or have a track only car then I'd say the 12bolt is the way to go unless ofcourse the 9" is a lot cheaper.
