How to select propper transmission gearing for a car

I figured that the car isn't going together for a while and the trans is out- So if its a worthwhile investment, maybe regear it.

I really just want to tear into that thing and get some expierence with it, I have very very limited drivetrain expierence. I'd like to have a cause for diving in though :D

I'm all ears:)

Suggestions:

1. Don't "Quote" on something like this... it just wastes bandwidth.

2. When you ask a question, tell us what "the car" is, so someone won't waste a ton of time telling you about auto tranny ratios when you are only interested in 6-speed manuals... and for what year/engine?

If you want to choose gears, whether thay are available for your car or not, try Chapter twelve of Tune to Win by the late Carroll Smith. Barnes and Noble often have a copy in the auto area. There's a lot of good stuff in that book.

If you mean gears for your T56 Camaro, search for the available combinations online, then search these forums for thread(s) on shift points and gearing. There are some techniques there, assuming you know your engine's torque curve.

For some thought exercises, compare the T-56 gearing and torque curves for a standard LS1 C5 Vette and the LS6/Z06 combination. Why do you think Chevy geared the Z06 the way it did, Trey?

I dont know about the gearing in the standard vette, Z06 or the differences in their powerband. I imagine the Z06 has more top end?

If this is the case i'm going to go out on limb and say the first gear is steeper the gearing is closer.

Don't guess, look it up. You'll find out what the ratios and torque curves are. Think about it and figure out WHY they are what they are. If you want to learn, you need to work at it. It'll mean more to you and you'll remember it longer.
