....the new Toyota Solara.

Like it or not, a 5th gen base Camaro will have to compete with this car.

I don't think that will be much of a problem...............certainly not in the performance catagory. I don't know much about the car other than the pics I have seen and from those I can tell that it is not a looker. The question is: what options are on that car to make it "extremly well equiped"?

Seems like more of a Monte Carlo or Pontiac G6 competitor.

All the usual...power everything, including trip computer, all aluminum variable valve timing DOHC V6 from a Lexus RX330 and 5 speed auto.

A four cylinder with 5-speed manual is also available.

Yeah, it is a 5 seater.

But what we have here is a loaded coupe, with high tech engine for substantially less than $24K.

We were previously talking about a "Berlinetta" type car taking on these competitors.....maybe the base Camaro needs to.

15.4 sec 1/4 mile is not fast! (Isn't that an old "ricer" joke?) :D

Nice interior! I prefer knobs for the climate control and radio though. Still looks real nice with the accents.

It's also nice to see a navigation system in a car less than $24,000....I can't count the times that I'd love to have a similar system. I've moved 7 times in 5 years so I'm always trying to find my way around!

I don't think so at all.

It's FWD for one, and the styling is the complete oposite of a Camaro - current or 5th gen. Bloaty, big-assed and just not very sportscar-alike. A gussied up Camry.

People who buy the base camaros either (a) know what a Camaro means and want a v8 but can't afford the extra and/or insurance OR (b) don't really know much about f-bod & Camaro heritage and muscle and performance but think it looks sporty / somewhat aggressive / fast. which suits their lifestyle.

Either way the reason they even give an f-bod conisderation for a new purchase is because of a) or b).

People buy Toyotas like Camry and whatnot 'cos they don't want to stand out from the crowd and the cars are supposed to be stolid and reliable.

This is why this bland, tedious Camry sibling is no future base 5th gen competitor. The Mustang and to a lesser extent EVO, WRX/STI etc fulfil that role nicely. If GM is going to take market share from anyone with a *successful* 5th gen - it will be Ford and then Mistu, Subaru. and perhaps Madza (RX8).

Welp...I can't really say it's pretty. But if Camaro can offer that sort of content at that price AND be gorgeous....then we've got a winner.

It may be ugly...but people will be cross shopping this car with other coupes....Camaro will just be one of them.

15.4 second 1/4 miles are entirely acceptable for a $23k, luxury oriented, sporty coupe. As a Z28, its pathetic...but to the target audience for this car, thats fine. My Grand Am runs a 15.5 in the 1/4, and as a point A to point B car, which is the market for this car, the Solara and many others like it, thats fine...

If a base Camaro pulls a 15.4, fine with me...

exactly my thoughts. In addition, I liked the looks of the '03 and older solara's not the '04+. In addition, the muscle competitors to the 5th gen would obviously be the Evo VIII and STi, Not RX-8 which people are realizing is a POS. Renesis is disappointing alot of people with its 170hp and 120ft/lbs

I think a person shopping for a car like this wouldn't even be thinking about a Camaro. Competitor?! Nevva!! Even if a base Camaro ran the same as this car it's still in a different category all together.
