Rebuild or buy used 4l60e?
Rebuild or buy used 4l60e?
I can't decide which I want to do. I've got a 97 Formula with a 4l60e, that has had problems for about 24,000 miles, free wheeling when off the gas. Previous post about it here
I'm going to be picking up a stall here soon hopefully and if I do I won't want to put it in with the way my tranny is now. I'll also be getting a tranny cooler. Now I can get a tranny from a 97 trans am with 33,000 miles on it from a very reputable guy nearby for $450 or get mine built for a local transmission shop for about $875 (maybe more depending on how bad mine is). So, would it be better to get a low milege tranny instead of trying to mess with my jacked up piece and taking a chance on a bad rebuild? Also, in the condition mine is in, how much do you think I could get out of it?
Thanks
Justin

If your old transmission is realy bad get that used 97, incase Your transmission gear carrier is bad.
I would get that used one you found and have it over hauled with new seals, race frictions and aftermarket servos and some other goodies, what ever fits your needs.
Also have that trans shop do the work for you and see if they will give you some credit for your old trans when they do the work.

I'd advise against the used unless you were going to have it overhauled first. See what the local transmission guy will charge you to do a teardown on yours first. I manage a transmission shop & if the trans is out of the car, we charge around $75 to tear it down & check the hard parts to give you a full price. If you do the work, that $75 gets credited towards the job. Your trans may not be that bad, so it could be a waste to buy used & have that rebuilt. Just my .02! Good Luck!
Justin, did you call A&A?
Is 875 what they told you?
I would call them first if you have not yet.
They did mine carryout for 750.
I will give ya a ride tonite so you can see how the stall is.
