how to set timing

well howdo you set the timing for 89 350 tpi sp3eak so i can understand not very good at this

On the passenger side of the engine bay, usually near the strut tower, there is a wire sticking out of the loom. Its a tan wire with a black stripe, and its got a connector on it. You disconnect that, then start the car and set the timing like normal. You will get an SES light, Code 42, you can ignore it. It just means that its disconnected. Set the timing, then shut the car off, and connect that plug again. Restart the car and you should be good.

You will also need a distributor wrench to loosen the bolt holding the distribitor down and a timing light. Hook up the inductive pickup to the #1 plug wire. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Depending on how good a timing light you get, it will dictate the process. If you get an el-cheapo, you will have to watch the light and see the mark on the harmonic balancer line up with the 6 deg mark on the timing plate. If you get a good one, set the timing at 6 deg advanced on your light and watch the mark line up with the 0 mark on the plate.

These guys are right on. Mine's an '88, and it's a tan wire in the big wiring harness, just above the Air Cond box and blower motor on the firewall. It's the only wire with a connector. You must disconnect before hooking up the timing light, do the timing to instructions with light, and plug it back in.
