Thinking of moving to FLA...

hey everyone...im thinking of moving to fla and i wanna get into automotive repair...but i need the schooling first...so what are the good schools down there? thanks in advance...

Daytona Beach Community College has a decent auto repair school. Used to be Nissan sponsored, but I am not sure if that is still true. Also, Embry Riddle has a good airplane repair school.

Come to FL. You know you want to be near the ocean!

Lots of good cars and car stuff to do as well!

Yep. You can get your airframe and powerplant license in as little as 18 months and start off at around $40K a year. A & P mechanics do very well. I believe the entire program costs around $22K.

The company I work for at the airport I work at gets a lot of their new mechanics from ERAU.

I don't wanna get into airplane school, cuz my dad did it for 22 years. I like working on cars though. I wanna work somewhere for a few years, get some experience, then prob. start my own shop eventually.

There are quite a few good technical schools in teh Tampa area. If you wanna start a shop start a machine shop here. There a couple around here but between, shotty work and gouging prices I hate them both.

I beg you :lol: come start a reliable machine shop. You get to build engines all day. Ill even come work for ya, and spread the word that you started so you get customers.

I am debating between Tampa and Orlando. And when I start a shop, will depend on how fast I can get a loan. Also, I'm gonna start with a quick lube, and detail, and branch out jobs from there. I'll be looking to hire people on a commission only basis, but I won't hire anyone until I feel I have enough work for everyone. Also, I will WAY undercut all the local shops, and even try and get my own performance work going. I've got 4 years performance experience so far, which isn't much, but is a start. I want to go to a good technical school for auto repair, then prob. go to work to get some experience, then after a couple of years start my own shop, and I will prob. as money permits even start my own dyno a few years down the road. We'll have to play it all by ear though, and I gotta get pretty well known around there, with the racing scene. But it'll be fun once I'm settled, and everything is up and rolling.

personally.. i think orlando is crazy... to many people who don't know how to drive (AT ALL)

it just pissed me off driving through orlando....

i don't know what to tell ya... but good luck in whatever ya do....

Tampa, just dont live inside the city, traffic wil kill you at rush hour. Live in one of the suburbs about 20 minutes outside the city. Everything is in reach from here. We have a pretty strong muscle car club www.badrap.net

Look into Riverview, thats where I live, we have several housing developments around here that are always building new houses, so you could look into living in one those, orthere are probably quite a few lots with several acres of land if thats more your thing.

Cool, you guys got any pics of the Tampa Area? I've been around Orlando, but don't think I've EVER been to Tampa. Educate me please. Looking to come down soon.

Do you guys have excise taxes on cars? How much is it usually?

Who has better/closer beaches? Orlando or Tampa? And how about weather? I like 70's, can deal with 80's. Also, who has the LEAST Hurricanes? Thanks.

Orlando may be slightly cooler :think: but the difference would be nominal, its gonna be hot either way unless you live on the beachfront and get the ocean breeze. Its mostly upper 80s low 90s this time of year but late Jan- early april here is beautiful. High 60s-mid 70s almost all the time. Same with late october though Nov.

Orlando is in the middle of the state, so no nearby beaches.

Tampa Bay Is on the coast :cool: . The beaches in the bay arent that great but clearwater beach and Anna Marie island are very nice and they are very near by. Fishing here in T-bay is pretty solid too if youre into that.

And I think it has something to do with the gulfstream, but Tampa hasnt been hit by a hurricane in over 80 years, so I wouldnt worry about that much.

There's no excise tax on cars, you just pay the sales tax percentage in the county where you buy the car in.

Tampa is closer to the beaches, and the closest one to Orlando is about 30 miles.

Orlando and Tampa are both in the central part of FL, where the weather is basically the same. Right now it's averaging 85-90 degrees everyday. The coldest it usually gets is around 30-35 degrees during the winter time. It starts to cool down around October, where the average daily temp. drops to about 75.

The hurricanes in FL aren't that bad. I live in the Orlando area and we never get it too rough here. The closer you live to the ocean, the more risk you'll assume from a hurricane or a tornado.
