I just picked up a new (well new to me) 2000 SS and the owner before me replaced the factory airbox with a K&N FIPK kit. Where the filter just sits on top of a plastic plane. I was just wondering what kind of gains this provided over the Whipser Lid or SLP lid. Is one better than the other (K&N or whisper)?
Here's a link to it - half way down the page:

Most people will agree that a K&N FIPK will put down better dyno numbers, cause they usually dyno with the hood open. However, it is said that a lid and fast toys ram air/super sucker ram air will out perform it at the track.

Lids typically put down 8-12 rwhp over a stock airbox ... the FIPK is generally in the 16-24 rwhp range. Those that have switched from lids to FIPK typically pick up 4-6 rwhp over a lid.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I agree 100% V6toZ28.
You have a excellent after market mod with the car, I'd keep it.
A lid might do better at the track, if a FRA mod or FTRA application is used also. But this will open the door to the possibility of getting water in the engine, known as hydrolock. The SS hood may provide cooler, cleaner air to the massive FIPK filter.:D

Solid!! It appears to be a solid construction so I wasn't planning on changing it. I was just wondering what it was worth. Apparently it's worth a few ponies.:D

I find that hard to believe.

Yup and you can do the FRA and Supersucker mods on the FIPK too and see even greater gains.

mine (98 z28 a4) came with the fipk k&n already on as many noted in here. everytime this issue comes up it goes back and forth like republicans and democrats. MYSELF, I lean toward a slight gain in HP or maybe just want to belive that cause no problems arose with my FIPK in over a year of driving and also in some pretty HOT conditions sitting at stop lights. THAT seems to be the MAIN and quite frankly ONLY factual complaint about the FIPK. Furthermore, most of the complaints come from die hard K&N FIPK haters who don't have them and have not experienced a FIPK on there Camaro. I want to hear all the BAD things about the FIPK instead of all the rhetoric, ( crap, smack talk ) from peolpe who really know. I just don't understand why this is such a back and forth **** dance everytime it comes up. OTHER than the above mentioned problem where the FIPK draws in very HOT air and my personal experience where sitting at a long light the temp gague has gotten worrisome hot, like 250 WHAT ARE some real drawbacks with this FIPK...

That sounds like a real drawback. Is this common?
250? Neither of my LS1s has ever seen 250*.
Chef, you're the only person I've seen who has reported a power loss with a FIPK versus a lid. Could you tell me more? Like, how much power? Back to back dynos?

Two of the Camaro's I run have a K&N filter or FIPK and each runs cooler now than it did with the stock filter or setup in there. If you run at 250 degrees, even in traffic, you might want to replace the coolant or cut the A/C on so the fans kick in and cool the engine off. I haven't yet seen a car run hotter after replacing a stock filter/setup.
As for gains from the FIPK it would seem less restrictive than a lid of any type as it just sucks air in and passes it on. Since it has no lid the air won't swirl or "get stuck."

Too bad it looks like hell and costs twice as much as a lid.
