thelemur 08-09-2003, 11:13 AM Inspection is coming due, I have hollow cats, but I do have o2 Sims. NJ is testing a new program where they don't test emissions on the tailpipe, or on the dyno, they instead plug into the computer and check for trouble codes. I am thinking that since the o2 sims tell the computer everything is in perfect running order, then I just might be able to pass. What do you think?
more then likely, give it a shot. Computer will not tell them squat since it's fooled with the o2 sims.
Projectz28 08-10-2003, 05:35 PM The new OBD2 test is really too new to be sure. They just started using it here last month. My guess is that if ther scaner to is just looking for active or logged faults it should pass. But last I heard, they were also checking for validity of the program in the PCM, to make sure it hasnt been altered in any way. So if you've have a modified PCM, they will know by looking at the checksums. But a stock PCM and o2 sims should not be a problem. The 02 sims trick the PCM into thinking the cats are still there and working properly... therefore no faults codes and you should pass. Just pray they dont look under the car with the ol' mirror. But I belive they are still doing a visual test. Give it a shot... and let us know what happens.

Sounds good, ill give it a shot in september and let everyknow. The mirror shouldnt be a problem since it "looks" stock :)

Injuneer 08-12-2003, 05:41 PM NJ just started the "OBD-II computer scan" test - no dyno - in August. But for now, it is only for 1998 and newer cars. They expect to extend the program to include 96/97 around the first of next year.

Yep, I read an article in the paper stating that the official kickoff for the OBD scanning was the beginning of August. I believe that Eric was scanned back in May, but the state-wide official start of the program was August. This means they officially got rid of the dyno testing completely, maybe Eric was just special (he thinks he is) :D :p
Matt
kevkop94TA 08-14-2003, 01:20 PM What about OBD1's? Are they still testing them with the dyno?
2MCHPWR 08-14-2003, 03:00 PM my PCM was editted via LS1edit. will it automatically fail this test? :death:
jmzlt1 08-16-2003, 03:42 PM This sucks, anybody know if gas stations will also test the obd 2? Or will they continue testing with dyno's?

I am special..
Matt, call me about MOH... I was just in Maple Shade too ya pain!
I got your message a little too late.
oh yea... yes i got OBDII'd in may at Cherry Hill's inspection station... yet they Dyno'd my dad's SS 2 weeks earlier.. Don't ask me ?
Projectz28 08-17-2003, 09:28 AM The OBD2 testing officially started in August, but there were probably alot of people who got it earlier. They were "testing" out the new system randomly I belive. Anything prior to 1998 will still go on the dyno... for now. OBD1 will probably always have the dyno.
If I read that right I think its anything newer than '01, the inspection is good for 4 years now instead of 2. Reason being that the new OBD2 systems are so good that the computers will know when something is wrong. And since the cars will be under warranty consumers are more likely to have them fixed because it wont cost them $$.
As for the modified PCM, I have been wondering the same thing. I was told that they will be checking for the validity of the flash file in the PCM to be sure that it has not been altered. If thats the case then a modified PCM will fail the new test right off the bat. But time will tell I guess.
BTW, theres a nice man in Maple Shade who can still "take care" of your problems....

This is quite possible. If you went to CHS, then chances are you know me or one of my brothers:). Those damn Hartley boys are all over the place! lol
The guy who did my inspecion is in MS. How you go about it for the new OBD2 testing im not sure. One of the downfalls to the new testing is that you actually have to have the car to test.... the days of swaping the sniffer into another tailpipe are long gone. Thats partially why I took my car off the street.

oops, i forgot to mention that :):D
Projectz28 08-19-2003, 08:13 PM My car meets all the requirements except for the "must be 25 years old" part. Last time I looked into it I called the DMV and they told me the car was not old enough:confused:. I said yeah but its a "special" car. It hardly ever drives on the street, and they still told me I wouldn't get approved. I never actually filed an application though.

Eric... I think you missed the point of my post... it was NOT intended to challenge you over your May OBD-II inspection. The purpose was to point out to "thelemur" that his year vehicle was not yet part of the program.
Really didn't intend to ruffle your feathers, and apologize for any misunderstanding.
