Wash the LS1 motor?

Another question. I am a newbie to the LS1 world. Been living in the LT1 world for quite a while.

Anyway, I found out a long time ago that I was not supposed to
actually spray water on the LT1 engine, b/c of the opti, ect. So I hand clean it, ect.

What about the LS1? There are so many things under there to clean!! Can you actually spray it w/ a water hose? Or would I get problems?

Thanks :)

But -

I'd suggest you baggie the idler pulleys - mine always seem to squeal afterwards, and I wind up having to oil them.

It's a short term fix - the one closest to the passenger side top of the motor has been replaced twice already, and is probbaly ready to be done again.

I'll wait 'til the cold weather hits, and the low coolant light acts up again - that way, I get the most bang for my buck w/ the aftermarket extended warranty. :D

($50.00 per visit deductible.)

Don't give any electronics a direct high pressure blast, and you should be fine.

Note that I am assuming you will be using a garden hose at the house - high pressure car washes are another story altogether.

Later !

I typically wrap up the alternator in some plastic, and remove the coil packs just for added protection.

And try to avoid spraying water at the bottom of the front of the inlet manifold, where it can get in over the valley plate and corrode the knock sensors. There's a bulletin (02-06-04-023) on applying RTV to prevent this.

Huh? You spray simple green on and then spray with a hose?

yep, wait till the motor is cold. Spray simple green all over the engine and engine bay, start the car and spray it off with the hose. Dont use a direct spray, but a mist, and it will look better than it did when you baught it

If you do spray the motor off with water make sure the car is on before you do so. I do not cover anything up, but don't spray directly into a spot for any particular period of time. By the way I use a foam carpet cleaner before I spray mine off and it works very well. Just thought I would put my 2 cents in.:p

I'm partial to Simple Green as well. Somewtimes I have a tough time getting it out of the little niches and it leaves a residue, though.

Hmm, carpet cleaner...that's interesting...

Hey KevinSS,
What does the foam carpet cleaner do?

Why does the engine have to be on when you are hosing it off? And is this just the engine or the entire engine bay that we are talking about?

Enjoy your clean engine.

Don't get inside your alternator or spray the electronics directly and you'll be okay.

And then again I washed mine off carefully with a water hose and it missed for a week:eek:

Make sure you don't use "Engine Brite" cleaner. It is also made by Gunk. It cleaned most everything pretty well, and put a little shine back in the block too. But it FRIGGING ATE MY AIR LID!!!! The stuff must have something like acetone in it or something. All the composite or relly heat resistnat plastics were ok, but the lid started discoloring as plastics do when they start to dissolve. Don't use it. Use simple green.

I believe you leave the engine running so you don't crack the block.. I don't wash inside my engine.. but if the engine goes from hot to very cold it will go bye bye

I haven't cleaned my LS1 yet but when I did on my old LT1 I used Simple Green and used a full gallon to swish water onto certain areas (vs. a running hose which will splash everywhere). Worked great
