Growing concern that the new RX-8 is 20-30HP less then advertised!

It appears that many new RX-8 owners are starting to become very concerned that their cars are producing less power then advertised. Some are stating its just plain misleading advertising and others are relating the problem to an engine malfunction or a last minute effort from Mazda to install a different ECU to give the RX-8 better emissions that reduced the HP in the process.

You have to rev the begeezus out of it to get any power to begin with, so I'm pretty sure it's noticeable.

The automatic version of the RX8 were always advertised as only having 210 HP but its starting to look like even the 6speed manuals are producing about the same even though all literature claimed to have near 250HP.

It seems like everytime Ford has something to do with performance claims they seem to be way off.

Yeah...like the severely underrated '03 Cobra.

I'm curious what other Ford vehicles didn't live up to their HP rating other than a rather moderate percentage of '99 Cobras.

I laugh at hearing that everytime. Due to some 99 Cobra's (5 years ago mind you) having issues stemming from a technical mistake, all Fords are labled as overrated. Lol. The 93-95 Cobra's were underrated. Same for the 99-03 Lightnings, 01 Cobra R, 03 Mach-1, 03 Cobra, 03 Harely F-150. And 5 bucks says the upcoming GT/40 is underrated at 500hp. I remember guys laughing at the then rumors of 03 Cobra's putting down 360+rwhp. A lot were left saying..."It's a Ford...overrated" and raised the Bs flag.

If anything, Ford underrates more cars than GM.

That's a shame for the rx-8. It's an otherwise sweet car.

There have been rumors flying for months that Mazda was having problems reaching its emissions and MPG goals for the US version of the Rx8. This might explain why Mazda could have changed the ECU at the last minute. There have also been a few examples of preproduction test cars that were used a for a few magazines suffered some sort of engine problem that was cutting the HP down as well, but Mazda stated that problem would be fixed before production (but maybe it wasnt).

What does the 03 Cobra put down to the wheels?

It doesn't have a blue oval on it, but the latest Miata supposedly didn't live up to its HP claims.

That engine is all mazada though. I'm sure Ford has had zero to do with that engine. The same with this rotary.

USHotRod, anwhere between 35Xrwhp to 380rwhp. It varies with most being in the sub 360rwhp range. It's rated at 390hp, but actual Hp can be as high as 42Xhp.

Ever since all this bad news started to emerge on the RX8 Forum website the site will not even load-up anymore.

That RX8 forum is the largest one on the net too.

I wonder whats up?

Indeed it didn't. They advertized 140hp, but it was closer to 127 at the flywheel. Mazda offered all miata buyers full refunds on the purchase price of the car, regardless of milage. They also gave a big cash back offer to those who wanted to keep the car regardless.

Mazda and Ford will be alot more integrated soon with the upcoming Futura and Mazda3 based Focus...so this excuse will be null and void.

I always though that pretty much all N/A 4.6L's tend to be overrated hp wise...however I have never seen data to back it up. I remember driving a 96 T-bird with the 4.6L and it felt like i was gonna break it if I floored it
