Screw the Clay Bar....Hello AJAX!

Well I decided to clean up my beater 97 GA GT.
Now this thing was never really waxed before and the paint was starting to look sad!

So I decided to clay bar it and wax it.

Well the clay bar remooved some $hit, but it pissed me off not remooving everyting, so after the caly bar I Ajaxed my car!:o

Wow, the ajax took care of all the $hit an now the paint is as white as new!
Waxed the $hit out of it and now it looks like new!

So If your car is filthy, screw the caly bar, it only works on cleaner, well taken care of paint!

hmmm, well my best advice on where to get ajax(dish soap) is walk into your kitchen, and bam, right on the sink there is this thick sort of formula, in a clear bottle...called dish soap....:) squeeze some into a bucket, then water, and there ya go. wash away!

Well, sometimes the dirt can be ground into the previous layers of wax, or was on the car before it was waxed, so it was just polished right over. "Ajax" or Dawn are alkaline, and will strip off all of the old wax, as well as leave your paint squeaky clean. That's why it got everything off. You had to strip the wax first. I'd strip, wash/clay, then rewax/polish for best results :D

Powdered Ajax? You gotta be crapping me! Why didn't you just break out the sand paper? Could have gotten everything off the paint that way.

Clay Bars are not to clean your paint, they just remove surface contaminants, if you paint has dirt in it you should use a pre cleaner, as said it's good your car is white, if you would do that to a black car it would need to be painted or at the least wet sanded.

Before you come in here and start bashing clay bars, maybe you should learn something about car care. Let me get this straight: You used a powdered soap that contains bleach on your cars finish? Hold on, let me get a piece of paper and a pencil so I can write down the rest of your expert advice. If your paint isnt ruined yet, it will be soon at the rate you are going.

ProjectRS, I think everyone is confused as to the Ajax product you are referring to, there is not just one kind of Ajax. There is Ajax brand name LIQUID diswashing liquid and then there is POWDERED sink cleanser which of course if very aggresive solid abrasive kinda similar to Comet cleanser.

I realize it does not matter which you used as it is your beater car but anything like this would not work the same way as a clar bar. You really can not use a clay bar on a bad/rough/oxidized finish any way.........

Oh MAN?! NOW you tell me! I just scrubbed my whole black truck down with Ajax the powdered stuff. It turned a light funky color, but I thought it would just wear off later! Crap!

FYI everyone who reads this post. Don't use Ajax on your car.

No kidding...this could be THE dumbest things I've ever heard someone recommend.

Good luck to whatever moron actually tries this.

I did a search but couldn't find any info on which is best

Comet or Ajax?

And do I wipe down with Pledge after every coat?

Make sure to use the Scotch-Brite pad to apply the Pledge.

Scotch Brite? Are you sure that won't be too soft to really work it in?

I always used Fast Orange hand cleaner on a small piece of 60-grit to get the imbedded bug-guts out of the front bumper. Works like a charm, and you don't even need to use water. I always get compliments on the smell afterward too.

Ajax + Lemon Pledge with some olive oil = detailing perfection! For those tough bugs, just make sure you use ZaneO's recommendation (scotchbrite pad) and ajax with some sand poured all over it

Steel wool and Hoppe's #9 gun solvent also works good :)

I know...I didn't realize I was giving away such a big secret. Whenever the neighbors come by and say "Wow, what do you use?!?", I grab my bottle with a big smile on my face and say "Ajax!!!!"

When I worked at a couple body shops years ago, when I wet sanded a car, I would put some Bon Ami (similar to Ajax powder) in the water. Bon Ami would not scratch the paint any more than the wetordry paper, and it helped lubricate. I don't know if Ajax would work like Bon Ami if used that way, but I definitely would not use it to wash my car, beater or not.
