GoFast908Z 04-25-2002, 03:52 AM ashtray is too obvious. I have a power seat, how could it work there?

Bull_in_a_china_shop 04-25-2002, 08:26 AM OK, here's the thing. You want the switch and indicator light to be visible, very visible. THey come on a harness so they have to be within a couple on inches of each other. Here's why you have to see them.(unless they've fixed this??) You can easily over torque, or "close" too far on the cut out motor. The morot is easily strong enough to break the shaft in half(oops). I thought I saw where newer ones have a cut off resistor now, but I'm not sure.
But to hide it? Led in the driver's console vent, maybe. Or even on the passenger side of the center console, somewhere. or...Glove box, and run a wire to the ASR for power and ground into the body!! That'd be hidden http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif

you need a light so you dont try to open or close it when its already there. it can tear up the motor/gears
how could you put it under the seat? the same way you would put it anywhere else, wire it up and stick it under there... you would reach it under the seat by bending down and reaching for it I would imagine.
Pretty much every place with semi easy access has been suggested. If you are unwilling to put it in any of the places already mentioned you will have to either put it in a place that you cant easily get to, like behind dash pieces, or just not get one. You cant have it all.
tnthub 04-26-2002, 10:28 AM I am guessing you live at home with your parents? Is this your car? Are your parents paying for it or are they paying for your insurance?
I would rather have headers than a cutout any day. Headers would give you better gas mileage, better sound, better power, and not be illegal.

GoFast908Z 04-26-2002, 11:02 AM i DO like the idea of it under the seat, but its a power seat. Do you attach it to something or just let it sit down there by itself? I don't have ASR in my car, so on the dash, there is just a blank switch. It has electrical wires going to it though. So, if i went to a chevy dealer and bought the ASR toggle switch... could the cutout be wired up to that? So when you flick the ASR switch on, the cutout opens? Thanks for your help

XKnightRider 04-26-2002, 12:08 PM GO Fast--Back when I had my '97 Z28 I did not have ASR, so I went and bought the switch. I think it was under 10 bucks, it took some playing with but I got it to work. I used the ASR switch to run my fans, so at the track or in traffic I could turn them both on for extra cooling. That was no one notices. On my new Camaro I have ASR so now I put the fan switch down by the trunk release on the kick panel. I am going to use my ash tray for my nitrous switches.

superal 04-28-2002, 01:16 AM I dont understand why he needs an indicator light. If the cutout is open, your going to know its open. Theres no way you would try to open the cutout when it's already open.

GoFast908Z 05-22-2002, 02:55 AM lucky for me, there is a performance shop about 20 miles away that specializes in Camaros. The head mech/owner knows the electrical systems of the 4th gen F-bodys like the back of his hand. I went and bought the ASR switch (Freaking $25!!! for a stupid switch) the electrical harness on the switch fits the wires in the blank switch. But, it doesn't light up when you push it. However, when the headlights are on "ASR" lights up on the switch. Anyway, he said he could wire it to the ASR switch (which my parents know is fake). To make it a little easier to keep it a secret, he can wire it so that you have to hold down the switch for 3-5sec for it to open or close. My dad isn't strict about the car, it's just that he doesn't want me pissin off the neighbors or putting anything ILLEGAL on the car. I'm probably going to buy the electronic cutout and have it installed by the 3rd week of june. Wish me luck! Thanks for all the help!

ls1camarogal 05-23-2002, 04:52 PM I got my 98 Z28 brand new when I was 18 and my dad didn't mind me modding it. He was actually pretty proud when I took it to the muffler shop and had Flows installed. (Hey I was 18 and I couldn't afford Borlas.) Anyhow, I installed a fan switch where the blank ASR switch is, since I don't have ASR. That way if your dad asks, just tell him you got a fan switch or something harmless. If you're old enough to drive, you should be a pro at lying to your parents by now. http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif

Cap'n 05-24-2002, 03:21 PM The ASR switch would work to open OR to close the cutout but noth both. It doesn't have enough poles/contacts on it. The way the motor on the cutout changes direction is by reversing both the positive and negative wires. This would take a DPDT switch with a center off position. I just installed a QTEC and the indicator light does not tell you when it is open or closed, just that it has power (or where to find the switch in the dark). I did not use the supplied switch as it was bulky and hard to hide. I got a subminiature toggle switch with no light and put it right next to the ashtray but still under the flip up lid.A switch with no light also lets you hook it up to constant power so you don't have to have the key on to open or close the cutout.

Timberwolf 05-24-2002, 09:41 PM Just wanted to toss this out as a consideration for you:
I had some decent times with my car, all bolt on. I went and did a bunch od dyno runs and found that the cutout actually made 6 LESS hp at the wheels than my MAC headers, off road pipe, and cat back.
If you aer just looking for more noise, the cutout will do it, but for more power, well, it's up to you to find out
MonteSS427 05-25-2002, 02:00 AM Interesting...do you have these sheets? Can you scan them?

GoFast908Z 09-07-2002, 05:51 PM Hey, it's been a while, but i've had the QTEC on the car for a little over a month. It is AWESOME!!!! I see what you guys meant about the ASR switch (what a waste of money) not having the right poles. I used the standard QTEC switch and mounted it under the seat. Its completely hidden, and not hard to reach. Just thought I'd give a resolution to the question. Thanks for all the help guys.
