fAt_sUnNy 08-21-2002, 12:37 PM Hello guys,
I am pretty sure this question has been asked. But I have to know so that I don't f*** up my Camaro.
My Dad just recently bought a 2002 Camaro SS for me and himself. It is brandnew and I have heard that you need to have 5000 miles on the engine to be doing crazy thing with it or if not crazy you know like revving it over 3000 RPM and not go like 100 MPH or something. So basically what I'm asking is do I have to wait till 5000 miles are on the engine so that I can let the RPM go pass 3000 or like go too fast?

fAt_sUnNy 08-21-2002, 02:40 PM What happens if I do go voer 55 and accelerate real hard and stuff when the engine isn't broken? Will it be really damaged or just a little?
BTW, thanks for all the help you guys, especially MonteSS427 and BlackHawk T/A.

Your engine won't be damaged if you go over 55mph but it is always better to play it safe until things are broken in before you start to be hard on it.

96fbirdA4 08-21-2002, 04:13 PM Its a good idea to take it easy on your car until you get 1000 - 1500 miles on the car. Change the oil at 500.
Some people have taken there car directly from the dealership to the dragstrip (i.e. ~50 miles on it) and there car is fine. Most people would rather not take the chance, and rather play it safe.

Big Red Jim 08-21-2002, 11:30 PM Having actually built my own engines, I can say that you don't need to break it in. If an engine is going to fail, it will fail within 10 minutes of starting it and driving it.
My last engine: I started it up, ran it for 15 minutes, changed the oil and beat the hell out of it.

fAt_sUnNy 08-22-2002, 11:43 AM Man after reading all these replies where everyone is saying there is no need to break in the engine, I so wanna get in the car and go race some rice rockets http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif.
And If I tell me Dad bout this he's gonna go start taking advantage of the 325 horses under the hood. Damn it's so tempting too with a f*cking Camaro SS. Well I guess I'll play it safe and wait till it has like 5000 or 6000 miles on it.
I really appreciate all your help guys thank you very much! And guys (and girls), remember to save your rear tires http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif.

BlackHawk T/A 08-22-2002, 01:50 PM When engines are built and dyno tested, they run them for about an hour at idle first, then tear them down, inspect everything, put them back together, run them for a bit and slap them on the dyno. Probably the equivalent of 100 miles on the engine and they are already running them hard. So no, you don't have to wait as long as most people say. I say as soon as it hits 1000 miles, change the oil and let her rip!

blacknight 08-22-2002, 05:22 PM I just got my Z-28 3 weeks ago and I am gonna break it in for 500 and have the oil change at 1000. Of course the CHP where I live is using Z-28 for highway use and I'm sure there engines aren't broken in.

fAt_sUnNy 08-22-2002, 06:04 PM Hey blacknight,
I'm kinda slow so I didn't quite understand what you meant by saying the thing about the CHp using the Camaros and them not being broken in. Do you mind explaining it to me?
Thanks for all the help you guys. I'm gonna change the oil at 500 miles and after 1000 miles I'm gonna drive it like it should be driven http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif.
psychocabbage 08-22-2002, 08:54 PM i think CHP is California Highway Patrol..

I may change the oil this weekend before making a 400 mile trip. Or I might not. hehe

V6white98 08-22-2002, 11:42 PM Yes CHP is california highway patrol and they just got a sh!t load of camaro CHP cars which are made to look like normal camaros (the lights on the top barely show and other stuff), no wonder everyone frigging slowed down in fron of my V6 camaro, it was white! I don't know too much about the engines they have but I assume they are the Z28 engine because they were talking about them on the news and bragging about going up to 150mph.

150mph?? Yep, I can verify that!! http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif I took my car out last week for a good highway run (~2:30am) and had the speedo past the 250km/h (155mph) mark, so they're good for about ~160mph before the governor kicks in (which is at 163mph I believe I read on here once?)
In regards to engine break-in, be nice to the car for a few miles to make sure everything's cool, then give it the boots. My car now has 4000miles on it, I gave it an oil change at 3000miles, and since it had about 300 miles, I've been driving it progressively harder. Even when it only had a couple hundred, I still had it on the highway doing 100mph (not for a long time), and it runs perfect still. Like someone said earlier, if it's gonna have problems, they'll usually show early in the engine's life, or there won't be any at all. HTH. http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif

Sorry I can't help on the original topic, other then I know the LS1 runs better 1/4 miles after its been broken in.

One thing that I am not too sure about is the 0-60 time of a Camaro SS. Does anybody know what it is?

My motor trend magazine says 5.2 for a SS and 5.0 for a WS6 both were manuals, I think the WS6 driver must have shifted better because it is the same engine setup.

Here's my $.02 -- after plopping down $33k for a brand new car, I'm gonna follow GM's suggestions to the "t" for the first 500. Worst case scenario if I do... I have a wait a little before experiencing the full balls of the LS1.
