bsmith 08-07-2002, 04:32 PM Your car probably came with non Z-rated tires, which if that is the case you shouldnt raise the limiter. that is done out of concern of safety.

LOL, yes the Moon's gravitational pull is very strong where he lives. http://web.camaross.com/bb/tongue.gif
It has to due with tires. If your car didn't come with "Z" rated tires, you couldn't go over 120mph. http://web.camaross.com/bb/smile.gif

.....maybe. I would suggest getting some "Z" rated tires, and then going to a GM dealership and asking if they could remove it for you. Depenind on how well you know the mechanic, or how much you "tip" him, you may get it fixed without getting a HPP.
I hope this helps.

DING DING DING DING And Ratio411 wins the prize.
The tires aren't rated to go 160+ MPH, so for that reason GM limits the car to stay within the rated limits of the tires.
Let's say your tires are rated for 125 MPH and your limiter is set at 163 MPH. Then you, like a dumbass, go flying down the interstate at 135 MPH and ***KABOOOOOM*** you have a tire failure, flip the car several times, take out 2 mini vans filled with soccer moms and 14 kids and everyone is killed or injured so badly that they wish they were.
Now ... enter the ambulance chaser lawyers ... The families of the soccer moms sue your ass off for wreckless endangerment and vehicular homicide. They win (duh). They then sue GM for the same reasons you do in the next paragraph.
Now, you hire your own lawyer and sue GM saying that they shouldn't have made the car able to drive faster than the tires are rated. (irregardless of the fact that you were doing 135 in a 60 MPH zone) You win 5.8 Gazillion dollars for pain and suffering, injuries to yourself and wrongful inprisonment for vehicular homicide. This in turn allows you to appeal the earlier judgmet against you since it was GM's fault, not yours.
So you get out of jail and the soccer moms and their families win their lawsuits against GM as well, getting 15.8 GazillionBillion dollars, and put GM out of business, forcing all of us to now drive Mustangs because the entire GM product line is gone forever.
Now do you understand why there is a limiter? http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif

no, its not necissarily true that if you go faster than 120 without z rated tires they will blow and everyone will die horrible deaths. the point is, if you don't know what speed rating your tires are....... don't mess with the speed limiter http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif. an easy way to get dead =P.

I agree with that statement. But the if the tires are not rated for it, then you're just asking for trouble.
It's like a bridge .... the bridge has a sign saying that it is only rated for 5,000 pounds. If you drive over it in your 5,500 pound truck, with the bridge collapse? Probably not, becuase there is a margin of safety built in. But, if you drive over it in your 5,500 pound truck and it does collapse, then it's your fault because there was a sign.
Now, same scenario, but no warning sign on the bridge. You drive your 5,500 pound truck across the bridge and it collapeses. Who is liable now? You were allowed to cross the bridge and there was no sign.
So no, driving 135 MPH on S rated tires doesn't mean that they will blow, but it does mean that they are not rated for that speed and if they do blow, the manufacturer will no be held liable. Same for the governer on the car. It's a liability thing.

Dark Angel 08-09-2002, 02:23 PM Yep them German Autobahn's are fun. But you need the Z-rated tires. I hit my 6200 RPM rev limiter at the top of 5th gear on my '01 Z. You do the math at how fast I was moving. My limiters have been changed with a HPP3, so yes it was possible. I just wished 6th would pull and not drop off.
Aneurysm 08-09-2002, 08:21 PM Who the **** is ever going to take their Camaro past 163 MPH??? A stock Camaro could only pull that with the right conditions and lots of straight, flat road. 163 mph is way more than I'll ever need. I would maybe go to about 150 but past that is just crazy.

dr97z 08-13-2002, 01:28 PM Yes, Toddzzz should worry about doing something to his car to get up to 120 mph a little bit faster than it does, because right now it's a dog and is getting smoked by everyone else before he even reaches 120 mph. So you better have a long stretch to hit 163 mph. Mine has a limiter of about 255 mph and have never hit it.
See ya at the strip brotha.

I would. I used to go 150 daily on my commute to and from work. Just a luxury of living in Houston. We have loads of wide open freeways.
