Well there are two fairly large scratches on the side of the car. They aren't that deep at all and I'm thinking they could be buffed out. Is it safe to buff them out. I know a guy that does a pretty good job, but he is only in high school. What are the dangers of buffing and how easy is it to f*ck up the paint with a buffer?
Thanks a lot!

You can do damage with a buffer by using the wrong product, but if someone knows what they are doing you should be fine.

I am by no means a professional paint/body guy but I have had no problem using my power buffer/polisher on my cars finish. The results have always been excellent with no damage to the finish. Like Carl said, as long as you're using a good quality buffer and rubbing compound you should be fine.

What are some of the good and bad buffers and polishers?

I would stay away from anything at a Wal Mart, Target or K Mart. I recommend the Porter Cable variable speed random orbital polisher (http://www.porter-cable.com/index.asp?e=547&p=2805) model 7424. It is the same one I use on my car. :)
