How many keep their N2O tanks visible? Poll

I'm really curious... how many of you hide your tanks in the trunk or spare tire well? How many make it visible on top of the rear deck or in the rear passenger area?

Are you putting it there for other racers, nosy people, or police?

Thanks!

I have mine in the spare tire well,at first it was to kinda hide it. Now i just pull that panel off when im racing. I will be moving the bottle to the "hump" behind the rear seat soon, cause the battery is going back to the spare tire spot. i dont really "hide" the nitrous anymore, but i used to hide every part of the system just for those "money" races.

I would mount the bottle in the well, but i still want my T tops there.

My bottle is down in the well. I have a hard top car and I rarely need to carry anything, so the well was a nice accessible spot for me. Can't readily be seen from outside the car either

Now my switch panel on the other hand can't be hidden... it's right in place of the old HVAC controls. Next I am fabbing up a gauge panel for the cassette holder that will also have a USB port for pcm programming.

i put mine in the spare tire well . not to hide it .. but its because its the best spot for a bottle ...

maybe i'll move it up later and mount it to my cage to save the money for a remote opener !!

I keep mine in open view. I have nothing to hide, everyone knows I run on the bottle.

So far it sounds like it is in the wheel well not to hide from the police or competitors, but because it is convenient. If you had the option again, it sounds like most would put it in the open regardless of the police.

spare tire well, best place hands down. Get a electric nitrous pressure guage and a remote bottle opener, never have to go back there unless u need to refill it, :). I like my setup, wouldn't do it any other way.

My bottle is in plain view on top of the gas tank area between the down bars of my roll cage. At some point the "sleeper" look has to give way to physics (cam & exhaust etc.) and NHRA regulations (roll cage, battery disconnect switches for relocated batteries etc.) so I just quit trying and put it for all to see....like it or not.

I have my bottle hidden in the spare tire compartment.

But everybody I know, knows I run nitrous.

Must be because I purge before each race.:D

Mine is in the spare tire well. I don't flaunt what I have (i.e. with stickers all over the place). I especially like the look on unsuspecting racers/ricers who think they can take me, then they get the see the purge spray and you see the "Oh ****" look on their face.

I won't lie. I like showing mine off.. Just not to idiots.. I've hate people saying. "OHH YOU'VE GOT NOS?!" And I have to correct them, "no, I'm have a N.O.S Brand system.." Maybe I should have hidden it.. Mines in plain view(well if you can see through my tint) Right under the glass in the hatch.. I love it there! And with the purges I've installed you can't hide it either.

Mine is in the trunk, but you can see it clearly (no back seat) from peeking in the front or once I pop the trunk lid.. No sense in trying to pretend I can get my Satty to go 13.8's all motor or try to hide it.. I don't mind people knowing that's what it took to make her go faster...They know anyway whenever I purge on those hot sticky days.. hehehe
I don't driver her on the street either, or maybe I would have hidden it (with fewer decals) from nosy people and police. It's not illegal to run around with it there, but I bet it doubles my chances of a ticket when I get busted for speeding..
I agree about the NOS thing. It's a brand name, and sometimes I do correct people. "No I do not have N.O.S., I have NX, but yes I run nitrous. "

Seems that the field is leveling out. It was biased to Non-Visible for a while. I talked with an ex-Sheriff today and in Cali it isn't illegal. However, if he is peaking inside with his flashlight it should not be hooked up but it really isn't inforced.

Also he mentioned an interesting point regarding theft. He said that if it is sitting out that there is a strong possibility that someone will crack the window to steal the bottle. If it is out-of-site, it is one less thing for thiefs to looks for...

It is interesting, but they can only steal the bottle... the lines, solenoids, and hardware are under the hood.

Bottles are expensive too. So much so that I have all of mine marked for indentification. I do try my best to keep them safe. They are in the garage when not in use or being filled. While in use, I try to leave them hidden and covered. The 10lb ones are easy, but it's the 15lb ones that are difficult.. hehehe
While in the car, well, it's a chance I have to take, but I lock the doors at non-home tracks when I walk away. At home tracks, sometimes I lock the doors and sometimes not, but I trust that at any track no one will break my window and grab my bottle. Might be too much faith in my fellow racers, but eh, I am a trusting soul.
That and the time it takes to get the heater off and the nuts (hehe) off, I just MIGHT return in time to kick someone's butt for touching my car... ;)

everyone can see mine, pics in the sig, I like reaching back and opening the bottle instead of spening money on the bottle opener. I have only had it there for a couple months, I am about to move it to were the rear seats were.

I asked the Irvine Police Department in California regarding Nitrous Oxide in a vehicle... they sent me this email response.

Yes it is illegal to have a nitrous oxide system in your vehicle on a public road or highway. It is considered a modification of your emission system and subject to a citation and heavy fines. If you have a custom race car that you are trailoring to a raceway, and not driving it on the road, it can have a nitrous system.

Investigator J. Cherney
Irvine PD

Soooo, I suppose it is a good idea to keep the system concealed. Sure would be nice to mount on the deck or in the center of the rear seats. Oh well...

Dont have nitrous on my 3rd gen, but I do on my V8 S-10. The tank sits between the bucket seats so i can always tell whe the temp is around it.

I also have the line going straight down uner th carpet, and a dummy 2ft braided steel line under the tanks so when the cops pull me over and say "Is that thing hooked up?" I can say "Nope, see!!" as i pull up my dummy line!!

if you have a nitrous permit, like myself, it is legal for you to have it in the car as long as it's not hooked up while driving. Hooked up means the nitrous line is hooked to the bottle.

Laws seem to vary between states. That's why I contacted the Irvine PD regarding Nitrous in vehicles... unfortunately, the haven't responded to my request for a vehicle code violation number. I would like to read the fine print.

I put mine on the drive shaft tunnel. Very easy to reach and if you are just driving down the road Unless you are racing a truck no one see's it.Just the look on peoples faces is great. I have a purge too but I never use it on the street,Unless I am running slicks and the they know I am spraying. I go on the if they dont know dont tell. But here is a pic more in sig.bottle pic (http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/show_image.pl?image=member_img_b/290000-290999/290347_16_full.jpg)

I contacted Irvine PD once again regarding the issue of a CARB EO#. Also, I requested a Vehicle Code Violation Number if equipped in a street vehicle. Here is the email response.

An NOS part may have a CARB EO#, but that does not mean it is legal to put on a vehicle. According to CARB, there ar no imported or certified exemptions on NOS parts.

Some NOS parts are application specific and can be used only in certain vehicles i.e. corvette, mustang, vipers, camaros, continentals, and certain chevy truck models. They are absolutely illegal in all other vehicles and violators are subject to citation under California Vehicle Code section 27156.

Hopefully this helps. Any further detailed questions you have reference this subject should be directed to CARB since they are the ultimate experts.

Still no response with any Vehicle Code Violation Number. I suppose they tack it onto an emission ticket or exhibition of speed ticket. If it is this tough for them to site a Code Violation, I'm not sure if the traffic officer on the street knows what is legal and what is not.

What is encouraging is that he DID list Camaros as an application so we don't have much to worry about if we have that sticker. Anyone have one?

What is discouraging is that the put Camaros in the same sentence as a Continental and behind mustangs... ;)

All I can say to that is I will continue to thank the heavens EVERY day that I live in boring old Ohio. At least until the laws get as stupid as out there..
I think it's rediculous to make it legal for only certain cars to be allowed to have it. Especially ones already too fast for some people who are too young to have them yet do. But I agree that it is good for responsible people (who take their cars to the TRACK) to be allowed to have their nitrous in the Camaro.
However, the person that answered you should have been aware that it is NITROUS. NOS is a brand. A brand of nitrous AND car parts... Just referring to it as NOS has always been a pet peeve of mine..

I understand about NOS vs. N2O... but this was a direct email quote from a police officer in Irvine. That kinda shows you the amount of knowledge this law enforcement officer knows about the topic...

Unfortunately, you don't have to think to enforce. Just follow what is written. Not knocking law enforcement, but it seems that all data should be gathered before making a judgement or stating that it is illegal... especially without a Vehicle Code Violation number.

Since I have an Impala I have a lot more room but still decided to hide it by cutting out a 1/3 of a 275/40-17 tire and hiding the bottles inside the tires with the cut portion towards the back seat.

It's stealthy up front too....

It's pretty much in the open. The Back seat when folded down. Want to hide it. Tired of the Nitrous comments at drive thru windows. As for the Law. I don't live where you live. I think the only certain cars can run nitrous. Is a Statement of crap But... As for the dummy line i'd might but that. But If I was to stop you here I'd have you crack the bottle. Too see if you were making me boboo the fool.
