Flare65 07-06-2003, 09:44 PM How many gallons does a gas tank of a '01 3800 Camaro hold? Is it the same gas tank used in the LS1 cars?
I'm trying to figure out what mpg I am getting with this car. I have heard that our gas tanks hold 16.8 gallons. If this is correct, I am getting a little over 300 miles per tank.
300 / 16.8 = 17.8 mpg
That doesn't seem to be very good for my car. I have a 5 speed tran and thought I would get better gas milage.
In an effort to get more miles per tank, I try to shipt around 2500 rpms and keep my crusing speed at 2000 rpms.
What do you 5 speed 3800 guys shift at an cruise at?
ImportKILLER 07-07-2003, 01:34 AM Not sure about your capacity since mine is different. But I think your calculations are off.
Unless you are driving your car until it runs out of gas (which I doubt you are doing), don't divide by a full tank.
Example: Odometer reads 300 miles...you refill with 10 gallons. Since you refill with 10 gallons, you used 10 gallons. 300/10=30 mpg
Just take the miles you drove on that tank and divide that # by how many gallons you pump in.
deadmeat2004 07-08-2003, 11:40 PM 95 3.4 ..i get between 22-24, anybody else
hbaldwin 07-09-2003, 12:21 AM I get about 32.4 mpg I do almost all highway driving..not to bad for my pig v6! 5-speed..I think the tank only holds 15 gallons..Ive ran mine pretty close to empty and the most it ever took was like 14.6 gallons...
94GrayV6 07-09-2003, 12:53 AM The older 4th gens like mine have a 15.5 gal tank. Your '00 should have a 16.8.
Oh, with my '94 3.4 auto I never got more than 20 mpg.
GoghUA 07-09-2003, 02:48 PM On my 94 3.4L automatic with 96,000 plus miles, I average 18 - 23 MPG depending on how much city driving I do.
I have a 21 mile one way commute to work, mostly on interstate, so alot of my miles come from that.
The best MPG I have ever gotten was 28. That was on a 12 hour one way trip down the interstate. For the whole trip I was between 27 and 28 MPG.
Later,
Matt
WhoBetter? 07-09-2003, 06:09 PM I consitenty get 26 with my A4, flowmaster, and K&N filter. It comes out around 400 whem i fill it.
As far as shifting goes I average shift at 2800 and keep it reving around 2000.
Satellite98 07-09-2003, 10:38 PM Last time I checked I was getting only 20 mpg. But that is a lot of city driving, and shifting (automatic) between 2500-3000 RPMS.
I've noticed a difference since I put the Lid on, but haven't done the math yet. Do you guys usually notice a difference after the Lid or any intake mod?
HAZ-Matt 07-10-2003, 02:49 PM My best average that I calculated was 28.8.. part city, part highway.
On the last tank of gas, I hit 252miles when the needle got to the 1/2 tank mark (which isn't really half a tank... the way the gauge moves). At any rate, I'm making 30+ highway with my auto and 3.42's.
deadmeat2004 07-10-2003, 09:06 PM what can i do to get milage...like im gettin 24ish i want better if possible
99gatorbird 07-13-2003, 08:17 PM I cut my cat off and run dynomax muffler with a 5 speed i get 30 on the highway and 22 in town. Since i have put on the ram air hood i noticed lower rpms at the same speed where they were higher without the ram air hood. it seems likes the mods have given a litte better gas mileage.

As i said with the intake mods i have done the rpms are lower at the same speeds than they used to be. For example before mods: 5th gear at 50mph was 1500 rpms. After mods 5th gear at 57-58 is 1500 rpms. Just what i noticed. If i shift to 5th now before 55 it will bog down to much, it did not do that before.
UNFNick2 07-14-2003, 09:55 AM Just got back from all highway driving and averaged 36.5 mpg. 450 miles / 12.2 gallons...ya I was shocked too for cruising mostly at 75mph and about 2k RPMs...it's a 2000 bird with 5 speed manual and i'm running premium gas with HPP3 tuned to high performace, holley power shot filter, lid, and B&B triflow exhaust...and mobil 1 synthetic everywhere
raiderman119 06-15-2004, 11:24 PM I drive 100% city and i get 18-20 mpg, depending on how hard I drive it. Hopefully this will go up with the addition of the FRA mod and Filter, and soon new gear and tranny lube.
sick94 06-15-2004, 11:42 PM i get about 23 mpg, that was w/ 75 percent highway driving at 85 mph. not too bad for a 3.4 w/ 180,000 + miles ;) . l8tr,
oh yeah, and i dont' have any cats on my car!
JoshMcMadMac 06-16-2004, 08:20 AM Wow, back from the dead!
Marbleyez 06-17-2004, 07:04 PM Factory salad shooter (16x8 with 225 tires) averaged 27-31
Now 17x9 with 275 BFGs and drag radials on back 24-28
deadmeat2004 06-17-2004, 11:42 PM 33.33333333 is my new best. got it for a 250 mile trip!! NO BS! I love my car
1KillerV6 06-20-2004, 07:12 PM My 97 3.8L auto got 23 with about 50/50 city and hwy. Usual shifts around 2500 to 3000 RPM:cool:
atl2001 06-20-2004, 11:11 PM ive had as high as 33 MPG on a tank (driving from flordia to saint louis with a CAI and an open cutout)
and as low as 13 MPG (heavy foot around town and no mods)
lately with all my mods i get around 26 MPG consistently however i have a commute of 40 min pretty much all highway to and from work
joed4640 06-21-2004, 01:31 PM god i miss my v6's fuel economy; reading this is causing a pain in my stomach.....

Just be thankful you have the nicest Grand Cherokee Limited ever made; and the fact that it was a one year production. That 5.9L is a sweet peice of machinery.
