ponch333 07-11-2002, 06:14 AM OK I just got my 02 SS with a six speed Sunday and the dealer topped off the tank for me. With 87 octane mind you, and I don't know if the tank was full but the guage was pegged so it probably was. The car had 33 miles when I got it and the check guages light came on at 212 miles on the trip meter. When I filled it up it took 13.8 gallons. so it is not broke in yet but dosn't 16 mpg sound a little low? I am driving it easy to break it in but I do very the rpms a lot by shifting up and down. Any words of wisdom?? Oh and I used 93 octane to fill it up.

Hang in there Buddy, I didn't even check my gas mileage before the 3rd tank and I got over 19 mpg. When I took her on a road trip, cruising in 6th, I averaged over 26 mpg
with a high of 27.75mpg. Maybe you got on her a bit more than you thought. It'll get better man. Don't you just LOVE that baby?

WU8 Always 07-11-2002, 08:03 AM i usually average around 17-20 mpg with weekend cruises, and that is gettin on it a lot and running through town in low gear to keep a lot of torque available.
I just drove it down to Daytona for the race (about 950 miles each way) on the way down, I got 30+ mpg running around 70-80 mph. On the way home, I got around 26-28 mph, but I was running anywhere from 80-105 mph.

LaSSt One 07-11-2002, 11:10 AM right out of the box, I got around 16 to 17 MPG with my new SS. Around the 3,000 mile mark the mileage picked up. Now with 5,000 miles on the car, I usually average around 19 MPG with a mix city and highway driving. Give it time...

jgkinsofla 07-11-2002, 02:45 PM First of all, do it a few times - you personally fill up the tank and record the mileage - then, see what you get. I have found that on GMs, specifically camaros, the fuel guage is not linear - it moves slow at full, and fast towards the end! Probably directly related to the shape of the tank. Also, I got worse gas mileage with my manual then I did with my auto because I couldn't resist reving it in traffic, at lights, etc. I did get up to 28 mpg on road trips with my '96 Z28 m6. Now, I have a '99 Z28 a4. In between those two, I had an '89 full-size piece 'o' crap Ford Bronco - avg 12-13 mpg!!! So, I'm happy to now average 19-20 mpg, city-highway combo.
INSSANE 07-11-2002, 03:01 PM You have a car with a V8 and over 300HP...quit your complaining!!
Actually, on my auto I get between 225 and 235 miles to the tank. That's half city and half highway.

Btchslp 07-11-2002, 03:39 PM Yeah, check it a few times, you don't know how much was actually in the tank when you started. I've found that, when filling the tank, even after the auto shutoff at pump takes place I can usually squeeze another 1/2 gal in, which will throw off your calculation. Fill it up the same way a few times and check it out, try to check it when your only running hwy miles and then city. I usually get 25-27 hwy.

Ken S 07-11-2002, 06:02 PM I get 14-17 mpg on in town/city driving.. This includes a a decent amount of playing around..
highway and city mix, i avg low 20's...
On loong roadtrips, like day long highway trips, I get 26-27.
Avging 20's is possible, but you ahve to be conservative.... realisticly, expect about 17 mpg on avg..
Beefcake61 07-11-2002, 07:34 PM Damn, I must be doing something wrong. I have trouble pushing 200 miles on a tank and that's waiting till just before the check guages light comes on. My last fill up recorded 17 mpg and that included a nice long high way trip. But I always tell my friends with their little econo cars, "If you can't afford the gas, you can't afford the car."

hammerhead 07-11-2002, 09:14 PM Why don't you just trade it in for a Hyundai and put a fart pipe on it? It'll go just as fast.

Once broken in, you'll probably equal the Hyundai in highway gas mileage.

Exactly what I thought when I read the subject!
BTW I too get 27-ish on the highway...not bad for a 320HP motor. In fact it's uncanny!
