Shorties, Mid lenghts, or Long TubesKamaroL98 06-27-2003, 03:19 PM Do they all perform about the same? Mid-lengths might get you ~10 rwhp, but LT's are the ultimate way to go if you want the most performance. Even on stock engines, guys have seen up to 30 rwhp gains!;) On nitrous, I'm not sure what type of difference you'd see, but it would all be in proportion to the N/A horsepower. A shorty header is almost a waste of time though:think:........hell, the factory manifolds almost resemble a "shorty" header?! Sorry I don't have first-hand info for you, but that's a start anyway!:) stik6shift98 06-27-2003, 05:53 PM long tube headers are the only thing i would consider KamaroL98 06-27-2003, 09:54 PM The Maniflds may resemble a halfass header from the top.... But thse small tubes flow into a single narrow chamber.... With shorties, there are 4 tubes that goes into the Ypipe directly.... I think it would be a pretty huge gain over manifolds. Im getting all this for $300. Hooker Shorties, two Sims to remove the cats and a Ypipe. Installled... Should i do that? tailwindxr7 06-28-2003, 12:32 AM Those of us in emissions and inspection land usually can't deal with longtubes. However, I'd at least make an effort to get mids. I'm not sure how legal they are, though. I should do some research on that, I doubt I could get away with longtubes here in CT, but I may be able to push mids, and it'd help out my car a lot. tailwindxr7 06-28-2003, 12:34 AM If you don't have to deal with any legal issues, then definitely go with a longtube design. Sparkz28 06-28-2003, 01:34 AM the most I have seen gained from shortys on a Ls1 was about 8rwhp....... I would say thats a waste of money... KamaroL98 06-28-2003, 07:08 AM In South Carolina, i can remove anything that has to do with emmissions on my car and run straight long tubes and get away with it. mw02 06-28-2003, 02:27 PM shorties are a waste of money the only option for midlengths are MAC's and they aren't that bad...ive seen 20rwhp/20ft-lbs untuned after macs/oryp longtubes are usually more expensive but they are also considered "better" as far as performance gains/sound Camaro ChriSS 06-28-2003, 02:30 PM You have a 98, which have the worst exhaust manifolds of the LS1. Usually 00+ cars see no gains from shorties (as their manifolds flow better), but 98-99 cars get some gain. Not much though. Less than 10. Only bother with mid lengths if you get them so a steal - ie. some used MACs for like $200 with y-pipe. Otherwise, go the LT route. Best long run option and biggest gain. Also, prices are getting good, with Pacesetters coming in at $240. Joshs99BlackBeauty 06-28-2003, 10:18 PM Kamaro L98!!!!! Who are you?? Its Black8banger from scfyb! Im a scfyb member also, under username ArcticLS1. nexus77241 06-29-2003, 11:51 AM Hey, check out the September 2003 Edition of HIgh Performance Pontiac Magazin. They have a list of the 10 best LS1 Mods. Number 7 is long tube headers. They asked some people from SLP, the owner of Detroit Speedworks, and the owner of Pittsburghs Speed Shop, and they all agree that "shorty headers are worthless on an F-Car ( p 45)." Sorry man, but I wouldn't get the shorty ones after reading htat. If you have the magazine with you, and don't mind... would you tell us the other 9 best LS1 mods... you know, for those of us who don't have the magazine :) Thanks tailwindxr7 06-29-2003, 02:16 PM Originally posted by Ryan_Cunningham If you have the magazine with you, and don't mind... would you tell us the other 9 best LS1 mods... you know, for those of us who don't have the magazine :) Thanks It's pretty obvious stuff. Exhaust, subframe connectors, torque converter, 12-bolt, etc... nexus77241 06-29-2003, 02:31 PM Yea sure. They actually list it in an order of importance, in which they say to do this stuff. There is also a 15 worst mods, so if anyone wants that lemme know. 10 best: 1) Subframe connectors with the largest tube section avaliable. 2) Cat back exhaust (3 or 3.5" so the LS1 has good back pressure for torque) 3) Air lid, MAF. 4) Drag radials for traction at the track 5) stronger and more precise 6 (or 5 speed) shifter 6) rear gears. They say if you have an auto trans use 3.73s. In a manual w/ a 6 speed they say use 4.10s so it won't totally kill the gas mileage and driveability. 7) long tube headers 8) torque converter around 3300 stall. If it is above 3400, the computer will think the trans is slipping so the pcm must be reprogrammed. 9) power adder - turbo, nitrous, supercharger (with intercoolers for tc & sc) 10) 12 bolt rear end - especially if car has 450 HP or over. zuluman13 08-10-2003, 10:18 PM what about th 15 worst | ||
