Something no one has noticed about the GTO...

http://gtoaa.org/monaro.htm

To make room for all this exhaust piping underneath and a spare tire, the fuel tank is mounted in the trunk behind the back seat. Capacity is about 18.5 gallons. When I asked the question about fuel tank safety, the reply was that the back end of the car is designed to crush on impact protecting the gas tank from rupture. Engineering estimates about 10 cubic feet of storage left in the trunk. Not a lot, but how big does it need to be?
Is it more or is that a really small trunk for a car that size? The Corvette probaly has a bigger one..

Most mid-sized cars have about 14 cubic feet of trunk volume and the W-car Impala has nearly 19 cubic feet, so, yea, that's pretty small

Not sure the reasoning behind the large fuel tank. But looking at some of the pics taken of the bottom of the car, the gas tank takes up most of the room aft of the rear IRS unit. Thus the exhaust system has to come together and exit on the left side like the Monaro because the gas tank has some clearance there. Of which it doesn't hace on the right side.
Seems to me If GM wants a dual exit exhaust system they will have to alter the gas tank.

Only reason I'd think they'd go with the larger tank is to avoid a small operating range compared to similar coupes/GTs. With an 18.5 gallon tank, should the car get 18/25mpg it will give you 333/462.5 miles. Comparably, an Infiniti G35 coupe gets 20/27mpg and has a range of 400/540 miles. Of course, the Mustang Cobra gets 16/22mpg and 251/345 miles. Not so hot.

Btw, I was windowshopping those G35 coupes the other day and they are very, very nice!

Yeah, those are true duals, but that car is basically to a Monaro what a Z06 is to a regular vette and then some. Its more like what the Cobra R was to a Mustang GT... I doubt we'll see much of that car's drivetrain on the GTO.

The function hood scoops and other body pieces maybe...

Gee, kinda like the Crown Vics everybody is bashing lately.

So if I get rear-ended in a new GTO 10 different times by somebody else doing 75mph, I can expect that 1 of those 10 wrecks will cause my car to catch fire, and I may die in it.

Shall I notify the attorneys now, or should I wait until the first fatality?

The gTo has much better provisions for a rear impact than any Mustang or Panther.

I think it's WAY too early to draw any conclusions one way or the other...

The Mustang coupe also has about 10-11 cubic feet of luggage space.

GTO is about the size of the Cobra, about the weight of a Cobra, about the price of a Cobra, close to the same performance of a Cobra (slightly slower in acceleration, but has a greater top speed), and now has about the trunk space of a Cobra as well.

It has a much bigger back seat though...right?

Not to mention better quality, fit and finish and surely better fuel mileage.

Nope

Just trying to make a point. There seems to be a bad paradigm about tanks behind axles and tanks behind seats here lately. I'd consider myself lucky to survive a 70 mph rear-ender at all - tank issues aside.

I wonder how many GTO-buyers will realize their rear seat is propped up against 18 gallons of petrol?
Honestly, it doesn't bother me as an engineer... I know the tank has to go somewhere. It just stripes me when the average citizen thinks it's a rolling incendiary device - and I am prdicting it will come in time.

GOATCRAZY - Glad to see you made it back to the board!
All your broken fingers have healed now I assume!

And tell us, have you reserved your dark blue GTO yet?
The '68 needs a mate! Then we can have lots of little goats around the house!
