How many of you can make it 5K on an oil change before the light comes on ?
I've tried twice - no go !
This is a '99 SS w/ 48K on the clock - A4.
I always run synthetic - this go round was w/ Mobil 1 5W30.
Close - 4,400 or so and 5 months, but not 5K.
'Sallright - I have the Royal Purple standing by.
Maybe it has something to do w/ my somewhat agressive driving style ?
BWU HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH !!
Thanks !
Britt

the light is set to go off when the computer thinks you should change conventional oil. if you're running sythetic instead of dino oil, you should be able to get more miles out of it, if you feel comfortable doing so.
I take mostly short trips and have to sit in traffic a lot so my light usually comes on after about 3500 miles tops.

I can go as long as I want without the light coming on. Then again, I have a 98 and we dont have that light!
In all reality, that light is not indicative of when your oil needs to be changed. It is based on a mathematical calculation based on how many hours your engine is running, the combined temperatures its been run at and the duty cycle of the engine. Based on these calculations since the last reset, it triggers the light once it comes up with enough miles that it thinks you should change your oil.
There is no scientific analysis done by your engine that knows when the oil needs to be changed.
As a general rule, true synthetics can easily go between 6,000 -10,000 miles before they need to be changed. I just do it on a 6,000 mile cycle and haven't had any problems.
I pulled my motor apart at 67k miles following this pattern with Mobil One being the only oil I ever used, and everything looked a-okay.

Bah, I dont agree with that. Ok so the oil doesnt break down but still think of all the contaminents that get in the oil. There is always a little blow by that gets past the rings. Water condensation will form in the crank case. The list goes on and on, my point being yes you still have a very good oil its just got lots of crap in it that is still bad for your motor.
Yes I do use it but for different reasons, for example it breaks down at a higher temp than dino oil, it maintains viscosity at a lower temperature than dyno oil. It overall is a better oil to start with, but that does not keep it from getting dirty. It will take alot of convincing to convince me that their oil is soo good that it doesnt get dirty.
And anyways I love working on my car and oil isnt expensive. When you consider how much u spend on gas, tires, upgrades, etc... oil and filter wont be high on that list. I dont think that changing your oil too often is a bad thing.

I'll stick to dino oil. I've gotten well over 100k miles on several engines with it. Yes, this includes racing those engines also. There was a Chevy truck that got over 1 million miles on an engine w/dino oil.
I change oil @ 3000 - 3500 miles so whats the point of synth with that interval? Besides paying over twice as much for a quart. I've tried it and found no benefits. Just run good oil in the specified weight and a good filter.

If you pay a shop $15 to change your oil and synthectic lasts twice as long as dino and your paying $20 for mobil and $5 for dino, then the synthetic pays for itself plus, it's saves you the inconviece of driving to the shop again also. There's no question that snythetic is far superior to dino when it comes to perforance, it keeps the engine cleaner which keeps it running efficient and it is superior in preventing wear so your engine will have a better shot at making it 100,000 miles
so why not us it?

Mine usually comes on between 5000 and 6000. And yes I run Amsoil with AC Delco filter. I change the filter at 5000, 7500 and everything at 10,000. If you don't start the car before you change the filter it's not too messy. Just like changing the oil.
It's not a matter of if it's "cool" and it's not so much that it's a good thing... it's just a matter of if it's a BAD thing or not.
Personally, I think that everything I've read leads me to believe that using synth and changing every 6000 miles isn't a bad thing. YMMV and if my car's engine craps out after 40k miles, then I guess I've learned my lesson. Until then, I just keep that opinion.
