Thought I'd share this with you as I know your thoughts on abrasives and cleaning. . .

True story, I swear. A couple days ago I was out using the Z clay bar on a couple places I missed (way on the botton, had to practically stand on my head to see the bugs, give me a break)and a neighbor guy walks over, asks me what I'm doing so I tell him I'm using a clay bar. What's that, he wonders. I explained it to him and he comes back with, "Jeez, I just get the wife's (I hate that expression, "the wife's) Dobie pad out and if that doesn't take it then I use Bon Ami". If you're not familiar, Dobie is a kitchen pad used to clean cookware, Bon Ami is a very abrasive powder cleanser. Did I just hear a heavy "thud" on the floor? No kidding, I was RODL, that's rolling on driveway, first I thought he was teasing me then I recall what he drives and what it looks like. He wasn't teasing me. So, after this, if all else fails, be sure to have a can of Bon Ami handy! Is your head spinning around now like the Excorcist??? http://web.camaross.com/bb/tongue.gif

While I was sitting here, literally laughing out loud, I got to thinking it is pretty sad what some people do to their cars out of sheer lack of knowledge, laziness, or whatever their case. I know the BonAmi works on glass surfaces, but holy smoke I'd never use it or a kitchen scrubber-pad thingy on the paint!! I can only imagine what it does to the finish. My neighbor is the same way though, to an extent. He came over one day while I was claying the car and asked the same thing, "What is that thing!?" referring to the clay. Even when you explain it to them, they think you're nuts. He doesn't go so far as to use a kitchen scrubbber, but he does use some nasty looking paper thin wash rag on his nice Infiniti. And, the neighbor across the street uses one of those big scrub brushes on a stick, or pole actually, to wash with! There is plenty of educating to be done around here for sure. I can understand though that to many people car care is actually work, not fun or a hobby as it is to us enthusiasts, and avoid it like the plague. Sadly there are more people who could care less if there is a mass of swirls and oxidation, than there are fanatics about beautiful finishes. Well, there is a reason our cars look and feel so much better. Because we care, simple as that. And, the pride that comes with driving the shiniest, cleanest car on the road. Enthusiasts are a different breed and always will be. Otherwise, Turtle Wax wouldn't be one of the market leaders in car wax products. http://web.camaross.com/bb/frown.gif

I had a neighbor that used to wipe the lower parts of his car off with gasoline to "get that road grime off".

The one that gets me is when people use that scrub brush at the coin op car wash. You know, right after the guys in the 4x4 just de-gunked their truck with it... then they're so shocked their car is scratched.

We have a lot of employees that work off site on monthly rotation. One day last summer the wife of one of these guys came out asking for help to fix the windshield on their new LS400. It had gotten sap on it. Desperate to clean it up before her hubby got home, she told me she had used a counter cleanser and it had scratched the glass. I didn't realize she ment scouring pad!

"I only dropped it in the gravel twice; maybe that's what made those big scrathes".

I took one look at it and told her she better make an appointment with Speedy Auto Glass. You not only could feel the scratches in the windsheild, you could snag your finger nails in some of them!! I couldn't believe it. She said, "I tried really hard to get the sap off." No kidding!

Then there's the guy who used mink oil on his leather interior on a regular basis. Man, that car stunk.

Comet!! Now there's a product that sends MY head spinning. Yeah, this guy probably uses that on his tires, although, truth be known, I doubt he even knows he has tires until they go flat and then he's wondering why the car won't go anywhere.

I am so glad I found this BB last year. I have learned so much from you guys and almost all of it has been great right-on info and help. I remember the days (heaven help me) that I used to go to one of the auto stores and buy "cotton" (gasp!) towels. Now I'd use those on my bod before I'd use them on my car. How nuts is that?? Just got done washing a load of car towels now again. I had planned to do more polishing today but got rained out.

This is kinda interesting, too. I hang out just about every night now with some really nice guys who also own Camaro's. They just love to show me all their latest mods and what they plan to do next. Some of them are putting on NOS kits and when they proudly show me their engine bays, they are so clean it's unreal yet the outside (and inside)of their cars, with one or two exceptions, look like they've never seen a pail of soapy water or an application of polish. I just don't get it so I'm trying to educate them on the benefits of cleaning their hot cars. I've so far gotten one of them, maybe two now, to get Zaino. They can explain to me perfectly the benefits of FIPK, how to rotate my exhaust hanger or the reasons I should Hypertech my car but when it comes to making that car shine they are like they've gone deaf and dumb. But I do believe I'm making a little headway as now they ask me what to use Z5 for and what to use Z1 for, stuff like that. Maybe there's hope yet... the only downside of it is that my hubby is on vacation right now and when I take off every night he asks if I'm going to go hang with my "gearhead" or "motorhead" friends. On the other hand, when he gets teed at me he tells me to go hang out with them, wish he'd make up his mind.

Well, think I'll go put some mink oil, at least two coats, on my seats and then I'll stand on my head awhile and check for bugs, at least until my head spins and I'm lookin' at my hubby backwards. http://web.camaross.com/bb/biggrin.gif Didn't the guy who was in "The Exorcist" die recently?? GM sells Bon Ami as a glass cleaner. It is non-abrasive, but I wouldn't use it a a pre wax cleaner. Works great for cleaning wheel wells. http://web.camaross.com/bb/wink.gif

Bon-Ami is abrasive. It's just that on a scale of 1 to 10, it is a 1.

Hehe, I'm way ahead of you there. I did that for this clay session. . . worked pretty well as a leather conditioner, too!

Most of my neighbors think I am crazy with all the detailing I do. Now I just give-up explaining things to them.. they just don't have a clue. Usually my answers are one sentence answers so they will leave, LOL. When I detail I have to be alone with the car... it's actually kind of relaxing, anyone find?

I hate when people are around when I'm Zaino'ing... I have to be "one with the car" hehe.

my neighbors don't even bother asking me questions any more. They used to ask me what I was using to polish my car and why I took 2 days to detail my car.
