might be getting rid of the 3rd gen for a 4th

With trading in my IROC, I can get a decent LT1 Z28 for next to nothing (3 grand max). Is it worth it? I mean, you're all 3rd gen guys, so you're obviously fans, but with what I want to do to my car, the move to a 4th gen just seems to make more sense to me. I would've preferred an LS1 obviously, but they're just a touch out of my range.

Any thoughts/comments?

Well do you want the LS1 or the 4th gen style? you could always just buy a LS1 and put it in your ROC. I'm putting a 383 stroker in my 91z for 600 bucks brand new :D, just needs to be put together!!

Well, the 4th gen has a little more than just the bigger engine going for it :P

Besides, I could just as easily put the LS1 in the 4th gen as the 3rd.

The original plan was to put an LS1 or LS6 in the IROC, but that's going to be very expensive, and the IROC needs lots of other work first. The 4th gen would likely be in better shape to start out with, not to mention fewer miles.

I think the biggest drawback for me on the 93 Z28 I had was it is a major pain in the a** to work on with four of the cylinders under the dash. I now have a 92 Z28 with 32k original miles, and personally I like it better. Just my opinions, Camaros RULE!

Swapping an LS1 into a 3rd gen isn't the big expensive PIA that everyone makes it out to be.

I perfer the 3rd gen for a couple reasons, looks and interior mostly. However, the 3rd weighs less, and its easier to work under the hood. Why not write what you think are the pros and cons of each then figure it out.

I've owned 2 4th gens and 3 3rd gens. I prefer the 3rd gens look and handling over the 4th gens.
I do like the 4th gen drivetrain and interior, so I swapped those into my 86 Trans Am.

i dont think ive ever had the treat to look at the engine bay of a 4th gen first hand but the idea of an engine thats harder to work on then my third gen scares the crap out of me...

I'm saving up my $$ and gettin an LS1 car next summer. Go over to the LS1 board and read around there a little bit. By next year they will be sub-10k. They're mid-low 13 cars stock and respond VERY well to mods. LT1 cars are also an option but personally im not up for the optispark troubles and i think 98+ cars look a lot better. especially WS6's:bow: good luck in whatever you do man

I was thinking the same thing as you but I already started building a 383 LT1 for my 3rd gen went as far as putting in the 6 speed and 12 bolt. then changed my mind. I wanted a car that could turn on a dime and a car that could pull good 60ft times so I keept the camaro as is for now will still be putting a the LT1 in it but not the stroker. Now the stoker is going in the 4th gen. I do like the looks of my 91 alot better than the TA Third gens look better to me Camaro's or Firebirds.

I've owned both at the same time ('91 TA and a '95 TA) and although I did love the '95 very much, when it came time to sell one, I kept the third gen. I like the idea of having a very clean looking thirdgen, not something you see everyday like the 4th gens, there are more and more 93-02's running around here and not so many good looking thirdgens. Although I do miss the power of the LT1, I honestly dont miss the car all that much (especially with all the trouble the new owner is having with it, just kidding Sean!!!). I plan on doing a monster build-up for the '91 in the future (heck, maybe even a big-block). But who knows when that will be! Just my .02 Later.

Joe.

i agree, its so nice to see a very clean 3rd gen on the road because 90% of them are junk. im starting to see more now that the weather is getting nice.

AHHHHHHHH those pics of the engine bay scare the crap out of me.....omg i hope they didnt put the engine block codes on the back of the engine that scares me...on that note its what they drop the motor into the car and then you never see the back half of the engine again? omg i think im going to go hide in the corner....and i thought my car was a nightmare to work on .....thank god for my third gen

See, thing is, my third gen needs a lot of work.. Mom decided it should get intimate with the back end of a truck, so hello to $1500 of body work it needs just on the front end.. Plus it needs a new top, so another $900 there. Needs a new alternator, no idea how much that is, but still not fun. Paint chips... little spots of rust in one or two places... You see where I'm going with this. I'm thinking restoring the 3rd gen to its proper condition may cost more than it's worth.

...so in other words if you didn't have a P.O.S. to begin with you'll be ok. :)

*cough* ahem

I wouldnt call it a POS by any stretch. The body work it needs doesnt make it LOOK bad, but it is quite expensive to fix since most of the damage is internal. The top is the original 1989 top, so yea, that needs to be replaced.. The car is 14 years old, so I cant say I'm surprised the alternator needs replacing. Nothing wrong with the car otherwise isnt normal for a car this old. It does still run perfectly.

Not to mention that it IS a convertible IROC, which there arent exactly a whole lot of around :P

I have had 3 3rd gens and 1 4th gen, now the first was 4 cyl so that doesn't count the 2nd was a 6cyl nor does that count but i did have a mint and i mean MINT 89 Iroc-Z (L98) w/ only 66k on it never abuse or raced adult owned TPI car and that thing was SWEET! no doubt lotsa low end torque and a sharpe car BUT the first night i took home my 97 Z, that my friend was a hole different Animal! the LT1 really has power, and that was when it was stock! True to work on they take some getting used to but once u begin to understand and are able to work around the akwardness the'yre fun as hell!!, Just reeaserch the diff yearsex.
-93 odb 1 Speed dens. stock 275 hp non vented opti
-94-95 obd 2 MAF again 275 hp
-96 obd 2 maf 285 hp dual cats
-97 same as 96 only with redesigned interior (like the 98+camaros)
just some of the differences...go into the LT1 tech room ask us questions and do the reserch, u might find out that u really want a 4th gen u might find out u wanna keep ur 3rd gen...

hope this helps and good luck!

I'm pretty sure the '94-95's had the OBDI, just had the vented opti with it. Later.

I LOVE my 3rd gen! It's not perfect, the picture in the sig lies. The guy who had it before me must not have been to bright and didnt notice that when going into a steep driveway, you dont go straight one, so the front ground effect is a lil busted, paint chips all over, wavvy paint job, when it was painted they put the IROC stickers a lil high, which I kinda like better, but it makes people think its fake.....anyways, I didnt mean to go off on my life story.
My brother has a 95 Z28 and I like it alot but like has been said, it's really rare to see a good 3rd gen around. Just about everytime I go to a gas station, someone will come up to me and start talking about my car. It's the best feelin in the world. And see nobody does that for a clean 4th gen. Yes, 3rd gens are slower, and the only thing I dont like about my car is gettin beat by 4th gens. Other than that, I dont believe I would trade it for a 2002 Camaro Z28.
