Used 3M aluminum polish on some engine parts and it worked great- do I need to throughly clean all the polish off the aluminum when I'm done? The guy at Napa told me to use PAINT THINNER or brake cleaner... I just rubbed off all the polish. What technique slows oxidation most?

Usually you buff off metal polish with a cloth.

After polishing the aluminum to a clean shiny surface you don't have to worry about oxidation, it's already there. Aluminum oxidizes instantly on contact with air and the oxidation protects the metal beneath, so all you need to do is keep fresh dirt from building up on the surface.

Polished aluminum looks nice, but is high maintenance unless it is coated. I polish aluminum bits all the time, from rough finish(starting out with 80/100 grit sandpaper) all the way to shiny(w/ rouge bars and polishing compounds). Once I get a digital camera I plan on making a website with extensive pics and info on doing this from start to finish to include maintaining various surfaces.
