383 LT4

If I fill the bottom half of my lt1 block with a block filler, would it be feesible to clearance for a 4" stroke? If so how reliable would this be. I plan on a max effort forced induction engine with all forged internals, 8.5:1 compression and all the supporting mods for a project like this.
Thanks,
Kent

thats a 407 or a 408 right? Too lazy to do the math but if my membory serves me correct someone here has a supercharged one...
I remember brook (aggie) was contemplating one, i dont know if the bastage went through with it though.

Yes, it is a 407.xx. I want to boar it .040 over so I will have 410.xx cid :D I plan on using a very good set of heads to feed this monster, maybe something around 320-330 cfm intake.

Mark Montalvo has probably had the most success with 4"stroke ltx's on the board. Maybe he will chime in and help you out. Sorry cant remember his screen name

That would very interesting... its a very square engine but it will make awesome power... my question is this:
Is it worth it over the 396? I mean.. 11 cubes is not that much difference.. and then again.. is it worth going to a 396 rather than a 383? Reliability.. tolerances and clearances come to mind... Another thing...the bigger the stroke the bigger the cam has to be... although with boost is a lot easier but still.. the powerband would be moved a lot lower and the characteristics still apply.. the stroke's torque will make up a bit for the cam lack of low end power, but, what about mileage??? Needing that big of a cam will affect a lot the mileage of the engine... Street usage...
Isn't better to put more boost in???
Anyways.. the LSx guys like the 4" stroke and are making NASTY power with it... either turboed or N2O. 9sec 1/4 come to mind :D
DAMN!!!!!

The LSx guys are also blessed with tall deck blocks and can fit nice large stroker cranks with nice long rods to still be able to create nice rod/stroke ratios which us poor SBC people do not

So that is the big difference... and the big advantage...
So that is why people move to bow tie blocks then... right?
Another thing... Now that I think of it with your post.. with such a big crank you would need a very short rod to keep a meaty piston for forced induction or power adder... Then.. making the piston dwell a lot more on BDC and requiring and extreemely large cam to fill all that up efficiently... ample LSA but lots of duration.

That's were I am coming from too. Going to a 4" stroke is a big waste of time and money IMHO especially in a LT1 based block. Yeah it can be done, but the extra cubes are not worth it. The added piston speed along with a number of other factors is not worth the gain on a street car.
A Bowtie Block or a World or Dart block can easily get 427-454 cubes out of a small block, so why bother with a LT1 to do all this. If your going to go big, go big the right way.
Highlander, a shorter rod will dwell less at TDC and BDC. Good heads will always help cylinder filling better than a longer duration cam will. In fact a good intake will do more for cylinder filling then a big duration cam.

Thanks for the replies, maybe I will just stick with a blown 383 like I had planned in the first place. I knew a 4" stroke had not been done by very many people and that is one thing that drew me to it.
