Split Bumpers

What year(s) and what model(s) did the Camaro have split bumpers? I thought it was only the 19701/2 Z/28.

Thanks.

No, the Z28 did not get the split bumper, the RS (rally sport) option gave you the split bumpers from 70-73. A lot of people try to add them to non-RS cars because it looks good, but they aren't correct. Go to www.nastyz28.com to see some pictures of what a real RS front end looks like. The parking lights are different and there are different grills and backets for the front end.

They also had a "rubberized" painted front nose extension.

Thanks for the information. Great web site. I really like the 70-73 Camaro's.

Thanks.

You can check out my dad's '73 Camaro in my sig...........it was originally an L-Type ("luxury" type;)) but we've basically built it as a Z/28. It has the solid bumper, and hence the signal lights that are underneath the bumper, but I've seen cars like my dad's with the split bumper and it still looks OK, but like Jeff said, it's not the "proper" way.

I too, have a 1973 LT. I am thinking of adding Z-28 options.

(PS. vote on my poll, I am looking for paint options)

Its actually urethane. The RS option also included the round turn signals that were above the bumperettes.

I was always getting people asking why my 70 SS didn't have the split bumpers. I'd tell them because it was an SS not an RS. There is a guy on cardomain.com w/a nice early 2nd gen Z28 that he put the bumperettes and some SS badges and now claims it has been converted to SS. I wish people would learn what was what before they claim it.

Just a quick FYI. The RS front is heavier than the normal i piece bumper front. This is due to the extra support brackets. So if your car is a drag racer. The front end isn't where you want extra weight to be.

That's why I put the battery in the trunk to compensate.:D

I personally don't like the way it looks when someone installs RS bumpers on a standard front end Camaro. Ends up looking like a Vega.

This is interesting information. I was unter the impression that I had an LT Camaro, but wasn't sure. From what you guys have described it's actually an RS.

It's a '73 with the 'high' rear spoiler, the split bumper, the round turn signals and the rubber nose.

I guess that's a good thing?

The round signal lights say RS. (The split bumber usually means RS, but many people installed them after...)

The LT option was mostly interior... deluxe seats, wood grain dash and door treatments, gauges on the dash (not lights)

Here is some great info on the '73's

The VIN with first digits: 1S87 is exclusive of the Type LT.
Non Type LT I believe is 1F87.
I have a 73 Type LT.

to clarify,
the RS option could be had in conjunction with the SS option ( like mine) or with a Z28 or just a plane sport coupe could be ordered with the ralley sport option.
when you combined it with an SS or Z28 the RS badging is not used.

Except 1973... where the SS option was replaced by the LT
However in 1973, you could order a RS/LT/Z28... cool....

Uh... :(

So based on my decoding, do I indeed have an RS or an LT/RS, or ???

the q in the vin means no type lt . rs can not be deternined by the vin. either the original build sheet is needed or you can look for the subtle things (color coded door handels, hidden wipers etc.). there is a whole list thats too long to type right now. all 73 rs optioned cars came with extra braceing that the 70 -72 cars did not have. a fake is usualy easy to spot by looking for these 6 braces
