I have heard that some wheels are known to bend or break under racing conditions. Which wheels should be avoided and which ones are good? Are the ZR-1 type rims weaker than the new 10-spoke SS rims? What are the best "budget" rims out there? Preferably 17"...

I suppose almost any wheel could be damaged if you mashed a curb or something, but that's not the ordinary circumstance. I had a Centerline (old style, lighter wheel) crack from stress on the track. It wasn't a good thing. Now I'm a believer in getting real race wheels, and replaced those with CCW's.

I wasn't talking about curbs and what not. I was told that just the stress from cornering at high speeds can break a wheel.

Yeah, I didn't mean to word it that way. My centerline was a stress crack, the way you describe. Lots of folks use stock wheels on the track and I've never heard of someone breaking one (now someone will pop up with an example, I'm sure :) )

Did not want to dissapoint.......I broke a 10 spoke on 2001 SS last year at Watkins Glen. GM of course said that " because it was used in a racing enviroment" blah blah blah......there was no warranty!

I am now using ZR1 style wheels and have had no further problems ( 20 + track days)

Go figure!;)
